Avatar: The Last Airbender is a show of great depth, dealing with many serious themes throughout its three seasons. However, ATLA is packed with moments of brilliant comedy interspersed within the more serious overarching narrative of the series.
ATLA’s perfect blend of drama and comedy is a direct consequence of its wonderfully written characters, each vastly complex and brilliantly funny in their own distinct way. Naturally, some characters are funnier than others, and while comedy is highly subjective, the funniest characters in ATLA tend to produce moments that are universally considered to be hilarious.
10 Foaming Mouth Guy
While only having appeared in two episodes, the foaming mouth guy is undoubtedly one of the funniest characters in ATLA. After Team Avatar arrives on Kyoshi Island in “The Warriors of Kyoshi”, the gang receives a hostile welcome. However, once the islanders have established that Aang and co. are not Fire Nation allies, the reception is far friendlier, with one resident particularly excited to see the Avatar.
This resident is the foaming mouth guy, and as his nickname would suggest, he foams at the mouth after and screams excitedly after seeing Aang, making for a hilarious moment. An identical incident occurs once more in “Avatar Day” and it is just as funny as the original.
9 Chong
Chong is a nomad whose only appearance is in “The Cave of Two Lovers”. In his one appearance, Chong provides some of the most memorable and hilarious moments in the entire series, mainly through the medium of song.
Chong is arguably a musical genius, his songs are simply hilarious, and much to the annoyance of fans, are very catchy. Chong’s interactions with Sokka are particularly funny, with their contrasting personalities providing the perfect platform for some hilarious moments. Ultimately, Sokka is left with a red mark on his head from constantly face-palming in response to Chong’s behavior, making for a very funny end to the episode.
8 Momo
Momo is Aang’s loyal companion and an important member of Team Avatar. Momo’s character functions well as a device for comic relief, and his contributions to ATLA are ordinarily delivered in the form of humorous interactions with Sokka, Appa, food, or all three.
Momo’s insatiable appetite and cheeky personality are central to his most hilarious moments in the ATLA. Momo does not need to use words to be hilarious, as his whimsical hijinks coupled with his jaunty theme tune are normally enough to elicit laughter from any audience.
7 Cabbage Merchant
The cabbage merchant is one of the most iconic characters in ATLA, and this is purely due to how hilarious his appearances in the show are. While most of his comedic value to the show comes from his misfortune rather than any form of wit, he is still one of the funniest characters in ATLA.
The cabbage merchant is a man of few words, however, the few words he does tend to utter when he appears in the show form one of the funniest quotes in ATLA, shouting “my cabbages!” in every one of his appearances.
6 Katara
While comedy is not necessarily her forte, Katara does provide fans with many hilarious moments throughout the three seasons of ATLA. What makes Katara one of the funniest characters in ATLA is not necessarily the jokes that she makes but the uptight way that she reacts to the other characters.
A prime and hilarious example of Katara’s uptight personality resulting in a moment of comedy gold is in “The Chase”. After days of fighting between Katara and Toph, Aang asks them both to calm down, to which Katara responds “Both? I’M COMPLETELY CALM!”.
5 King Bumi
Bumi is the eccentric King of Omashu who is certainly fond of practical jokes. First appearing in “The King of Omashu”, Bumi puts Aang through the wringer, forcing him to undertake difficult and dangerous challenges just for some light entertainment.
Aang refers to Bumi as a “mad genius” which is certainly an astute character summary. Bumi should not only be considered a genius of earthbending but also comedy. Bumi’s wacky and unpredictable personality combined with the telling of his dreadful jokes is a joy to watch and makes him one of the funniest characters in ATLA.
4 Aang
As the Avatar, Aang’s primary objective is to save the world and bring balance to the Four Nations. In fairness, Aang did accomplish this goal in very difficult circumstances. However, unlike many of his predecessors, Aang went about his Avatar business light-heartedly, never shying away from cracking a joke or two.
Aang has treated fans to some very funny moments throughout ATLA and is undoubtedly one of the funniest characters in the series. Much of Aang’s humor stems from his immaturity rather than his wit, although this does not take away from his brilliant comedic influence on ATLA.
3 Iroh
Iroh is wise, compassionate, and one of the most powerful benders in ATLA, but he is also hilariously funny. While a great deal of his comedic contributions to the series comes from his cheesy jokes, one cannot help but laugh at them no matter how bad they are.
Iroh provides many hilarious moments throughout ATLA. One of his funniest moments is undoubtedly at the end of “The Waterbending Scroll”, where he reveals to Zuko that he had the Pai Sho tile up his sleeve the whole time, making their trip utterly useless. This moment typifies Iroh’s tendency to time his humorous remarks perfectly and positions him as one of the funniest characters in the show.
2 Toph
Toph is undoubtedly one of the funniest characters in ATLA; her dry wit and self-deprecating humor are unrivaled and never fail to garner a laugh from fans. Like all great standup comedians, Toph is able to make a joke out of everything and everyone, especially herself.
Toph showcases her aptitude for comedy in her very first ATLA appearance by hilariously mocking her overconfident opponent, The Boulder before their Earth Rumble match. Toph’s subsequent moments of hilarity include calling Aang “twinkle toes,” asking Suki to let her drown in “The Serpent’s Pass,” and of course, the declaration that she is the “Melon Lord!” in “Sozin’s Comet”.
1 Sokka
Sokka’s character has many roles within ATLA, one of which is that of the comedian. Sokka’s character is often used as comic relief from tense situations or just simply to give the audience a reason to laugh.
Therefore, it is no surprise that Sokka is the funniest character in ATLA, and he even admits that most of his identity is based upon his sarcastic remarks. Sokka provides many hilarious moments throughout the three seasons of ATLA, but few are funnier than his antics in “The Desert.” After Sokka drinks the juice of a strange cactus, he begins to hallucinate and say ridiculous things, making for one of the funniest sequences in the entire series.
