Avatar: The Last Airbender’s characters are beloved, but that does not mean they are perfect. In fact, they have all done some awful things.

Since Avatar: The Last Airbender has returned to Netflix, fans new and old are obsessing over reliving the series. It’s just as good as everyone remembers: The themes are mature for a children’s show and the characters are so lovable. However, that doesn’t mean they are perfect.
While fans binge the action all over again, they may see the characters aren’t all goodie-two-shoes. Every main character did something awful through the course of the show — some more than others. Below is a list of the worst things each member of the cast did, whether fans remember or not.
10 Ozai: World Domination
It’s not difficult to discern the worst thing Fire Lord Ozai did. In fact, one entry could barely scratch the surface. But it all stemmed from one goal: Total world domination. He took it a step further when, in the four-part finale, Ozai tried to ascend and become the Phoenix King.
Avatar: The Last Airbender was praised for the way it traversed difficult themes. It never shied away from war, the villains, or the heroes. Fortunately, Avatar Aang is able to stop Ozai in the end from causing even more destruction, but much of the damage had been done when the Fire Lord and his predecessors tried to take over the world.
9 Ty Lee: Teaming Up With Azula
Ty Lee wasn’t bad to the bone, not like the ringleader of her squad, Azula, but falling into the wrong crowd was the worst thing Ty Lee could have done. Along with Azula and Mai, Ty Lee wreaked havoc as one-third of Ozai’s Angels, as the ladies are affectionately known in the fandom.
Ty Lee battled against Team Avatar time and again, getting in the way of their mission to save the world. In the end, she falls in with the right crowd, the Kyoshi Warriors, and actually becomes one herself. It’s a great fit for the former circus acrobat.
8 Azula: Turning On Her Friends
Speaking of Azula, she gave Ozai a run for his money. Her list of dastardly deeds may be longer than anyone else’s. Still, one aspect of her character sticks out more than others: She completely betrayed her friends in Book Three. Ty Lee and Mai wanted nothing to do with her after Azula turned her back on them.
This also coincided with the start of Azula’s downfall and psychotic break. After losing Ty Lee and Mai, Azula threw herself into Ozai’s plan for world domination as she sought to end her brother once and for all.
7 Suki: Disappearing For Too Long
Suki made a memorable first appearance on Kyoshi Island in season 1. And even though fans couldn’t help but fall in love with her warrior spirit — as Sokka fell in love himself — Suki doesn’t actually reappear until season 2. While it’s not exactly her fault, it still accounts for the worst thing she did.
The crew doesn’t see Suki again until arriving in Ba Sing Se. Even then, the reunion is short-lived. Suki disappears again before finally sticking around for good after Sokka breaks her out of The Boiling Rock in the epic two-parter from Book Three. The show could have used a lot more Suki.
6 Iroh: Besieging Ba Sing Se
Uncle Iroh is arguably the most beloved character in the series, and he’s as close to a saint as it comes in the cast. However, he didn’t always live a life made of wise words and tea time; once upon a time, he was a fearsome Fire National general who successfully besieged Ba Singe Se’s Outer Wall.
This was the worst thing he could have done in two ways, as he was not only fighting on the side of evil but he failed even at that. Upon receiving tragic news about his son Lu Ten, Iroh retreats, disgracing himself in the eyes of the Fire Nation army. But every fan knows Iroh more than redeemed himself through his relationship with his nephew Zuko.
5 Zuko: Sending An Assassin After Aang
Zuko is another character with a long list of bad things on his record, but one stood out above all the others. Before Zuko and the Aang join forces, Zuko sent out a laser-shooting, firebender assassin to stop Team Avatar. It was a brutal battle, but the heroes prevailed.
Who could forget Sparky Sparky Boom Man? Certainly not Zuko. What he did was so bad, in fact, Zuko still regretted it decades later. In a hysterical callback during The Legend of Korra, Zuko reminisces about dispatching Combustion Man to take out Aang. Although, he makes it very clear after a beat, his plan “didn’t work.”
4 Toph: Cheating & Scamming
The tension between Toph and Katara boiled over in the Book Three episode, “The Runaway,” all because of the worst thing Toph did in the show: Cheat. Toph acted dishonestly multiple times through the episode, running scams and cheating gamblers to earn money for Team Avatar. Katara, ever the group’s moral compass, disagreed with Toph’s methods.
Toph was never a stranger to standing up to authority, so she gave Katara the cold shoulder, even though her actions bite back with consequences. For someone who ended up becoming a revered Chief of Police in Republic City, it was pretty terrible for Toph to turn into a con woman for a stint.
3 Sokka: His Sexist Rants
By the end of the series, Sokka becomes a lovable and goofy hero driven by his loyalty to friends and family. He was a fan favorite for good reason, but he didn’t exactly start that way. At the beginning of the show, Sokka was pretty sexist. He blamed Katara in the first episode for screwing things up because she was a girl.
Then, Sokka spent the entirety of their time on Kyoshi Island doubting the skills of the powerful Kyoshi Warriors. Luckily, he learned a huge lesson during season 1’s fourth episode, although it did take a major whooping from Suki to make the point stick. Afterward, Sokka stopped doubting girls, but the sting of his sexism in the early episodes can’t be forgotten.
2 Katara: Confronting Her Mother’s Killer
Katara was a righteous leader known for her passionate speeches and occasional “tearbending.” Sometimes, though, this righteousness spilled over into something more sinister. Book Three was a tough time for her, as Katara had a lot of beef to hash out with her father, Zuko, and, most notably, her mother’s killer.
Katara nearly abandoned all sense when she used Zuko to chase him down. In nearly losing the parts of herself that made her a hero, Katara almost became like the very man she hated for so long, who ended up being sad and pathetic. Katara doesn’t go through with it, but it was still the worst thing she did in the show.
1 Aang: Lashing Out At The Sandbenders
Avatar Aang was known for being cool as a cucumber throughout the entire show. He is probably most memorable for his pacifism, which resulted in the extremely moral decision of sparing Fire Lord Ozai and stripping his bending powers instead. However, he did something pretty terrible one time: Lashing out at the sandbenders.
In Book Two, when Aang learned Appa had been taken, he turned against all parties involved. It was unlike the famously gentle Aang to become so angry, as he even went into the Avatar State to exact his revenge. Fortunately for the benders, Katara calms Aang back down, but he nearly lost a piece of himself in this close call.
