Avatar: The Last Airbender’s iconic cactus juice scene is even more hilarious in live-action. The popular Nickelodeon show tells the story of Aang, the titular last Airbender who is destined to restore harmony among the Fire, Earth, Air, and Water nations. However, Aang would not have made it very far without the waterbender brother and sister duo Sokka and Katara, as well as the blind Earthbender Toph. The biggest obstacle the friends have to face is the threat of the Fire Nation, which is essentially like the Galactic Empire in Star Wars.

Avatar: The Last Airbender aired for three seasons on TV from 2005 to 2008. Fans were thrilled when Netflix added the entire series back in May. The streamer also has a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender in the works. While the overarching conflict of the series is rather dark, the show is also known for its comedy, particularly when it comes to Sokka. This includes one of the show’s most iconic scenes, where he drinks cactus juice in the desert.

Aang and his friends are left stranded in the desert after Aang’s flying bison, Appa, is kidnapped. The bender crew naturally falls victim to the terrible heat. In a fit of desperation to quench his thirst, Sokka consumes hallucinogenic cactus juice. The results are hilariously captured in a live-action remake by DO Yu Productions. Actor Jonathan Tanigaki captures Sokka’s spirit and humor brilliantly, which can be difficult to do when translating animated humor to live-action. Check out the infamous cactus juice scene below.

The upcoming Netflix live-action adaptation of the show is both exciting and somewhat nerve-racking. After all, the 2010 movie adaptation of The Last Airbender was a critical box office bomb. Luckily, ten years is enough time to think of a new series with vast improvements and to learn from the film’s failures. Avatar: The Last Airbender is clearly quite beloved fifteen years after its premiere, with the show skyrocketing to number one on Netflix when it was released for streaming. One of the most important things the official live-action adaptation will hopefully do is cast POC as the leads. One of the greatest aspects of Avatar: The Last Airbender is its diverse cast, and Netflix should respect that.

Regardless of what happens with the live-action adaptation, the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series will always be beloved by fans old and new. While there’s no official release date for the Netflix adaptation, hopefully DO Yu Productions will drop more Avatar: The Last Airbender videos that’ll keep fans entertained in the meantime. Though it will be hard to top this particular scene, there are plenty of scenes ripe for a live-action transformation.
