Stills from James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water have leaked online ahead of the first trailer’s debut.

The images feature different Na’vi tribes, mainly based in or around water. Included in the images are hints of some of the civilizations and marine life that dominate the world of the film franchise, as well as children and a sailing crowd of Na’vi. It’s uncertain who these characters might be, but children and parenthood are a clear theme, even in the stills.

After over a decade with little news and few updates, fans of Cameron’s budding franchise have been treated to a number of major announcements in recent days. That includes the release of the Avatar sequel’s official synopsis and its official title, The Way of Water.

The synopsis confirms the upcoming film will take place over a decade after the events of 2009’s Avatar. Jake Sully and Neytiri will make a return, this time with their new family on Pandora. The film will see them rise up to a new challenge and struggle to keep each other safe. The description hints at adventure, tragedy and family.

Despite the notably lengthy amount of time that passed since the widely praised first film, studio execs and the those involved in Avatar: The Way of Water have expressed confidence in what Cameron has been able to produce. 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell recently went so far as to say, “It’s going to blow people away. You’re not ready for what [director James Cameron] is doing.” He added, “This is not just a sequel, it’s a saga. And it’s a family saga. [Avatar 2] will be compelling on its own, but it will also be extremely compelling to return to those characters and to see how they’ve evolved.”

Star Zoe Saldaña also teased the emotional impact the film had on her, though she had not seen it in its entirety. “It’s powerful, it’s compelling,” Saldaña said. “I can get choked up just talking about it, because I was able to see just 20 minutes of the second installment, right before the year ended, last year, and I was speechless. I was moved to tears.”

Avatar 2 is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 16, 2022, followed by Avatar 3 two years later on Dec. 20, 2024.
