Original Zuko voice actor Dante Basco said he’s spoken to Dallas Liu, his live-action replacement on Avatar: The Last Airbender, about taking over the iconic role.

Basco appeared at FACTS 2021 in Ghent, Belgium, and revealed he had a conversation with Liu, who was recently cast as Zuko for Netflix’s live-action remake of Avatar. “I just had a conversation with the new kid playing Zuko on the show for Netflix– Dallas Liu– and we were talking about the character, and, you know, I was kinda passing the torch, like, bro, it’s your turn to play him, how you’re gonna play him,” the actor said.

“I’ll tell you things about how I did it, and it could help you on your journey, but ultimately, it’s your turn to play him how you’re gonna play him, wherever that character intersects with you,” Basco continued, referencing the advice he gave Liu.

Basco, who was previously best known for playing Rufio in 1991’s Hook, voiced Prince Zuko from 2005-2008 on Nickelodeon’s Avatar. He’d go on to voice the character’s grandson, General Iroh, on the sequel series, The Legend of Korra. More recently, he and Korra voice actor Janet Varney started an Avatar rewatch podcast, Braving the Elements, featuring behind-the-scenes stories from making the show.

Liu, who recently had a small role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is best known for playing Maya’s younger brother, Shuji, on Hulu’s PEN15. Back in August, the actor joined the Avatar remake’s principal cast alongside Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley as Aang, Katara, and Sokka, respectively.

In September, Liu spoke about how nervous and excited he was to bring one of his favorite characters to life, saying, “I’m just as much of a fan of Zuko as everyone else is. So I mean, obviously, I’m excited because this is like a dream. But at the same time, it gets a little nerve-wracking, you know? To do a good job, and I mean, at the end of the day, I can only do what I’m capable of, but I hope that people enjoy my performance.”

Production has begun on Avatar: The Last Airbender, but the show does not yet have a release date on Netflix.
