Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

The 2010s proved to be a profitable decade for the Avengers. The superhero ensemble broke box-office records with several MCU hits and as for the comics, these heroes went through some major reinterpretations. With newer versions of Avengers like Captain America, Thor, and Spider-Man, the team went through a change in lineup while retaining some of the classic characters.

If there’s any Marvel team that can rival Avengers’ popularity, it might be the X-Men. Not only did both teams clash in an ambitious crossover event in this period but they also joined forces as a new branch called the Uncanny Avengers.

10 Avengers Vs X-Men (Limited Series)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

After the Phoenix Force takes control over Hope Summers, the X-Men and the Avengers are at loggerheads while deciding Hope’s fate. The former firmly believes that the Force might end up leading to a rebirth of the Mutant species as a whole. The Avengers, on the other hand, vow to go against the X-Men for they believe that the Force can bring about total annihilation.

The selling point of the majestic Avengers comic event is of course, the central rivalry that forms the narrative. But it’s not just the large team battles that stand out. True to its name, Avengers vs X-Men is filled with several one-on-one clashes such as ‘Wolverine vs Captain America’ and ‘Spider-Man vs Colossus’.

9 Civil War II (Limited Series)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

After a boy identifying as an Inhuman claims to have prophetic powers, Captain Marvel decides to use his powers to prevent future disasters. However, Iron Man has his own doubts regarding this matter as he doesn’t trust the Inhuman’s powers. What follows is a clash of ideals between the two heroes that yet again split the Avengers into two factions.

2006’s Civil War makes for essential reading and was an instant hit. The sequel carries on the tradition of showing the possibility of moralistic differences between heroes. None of the sides are wrong in their thoughts on saving the world. It’s just that they are too adamant to prove themselves right. In the end, it’s not just the Avengers but also the readers who must decide what is right and what is not.

8 The Red Shadow (Uncanny Avengers Vol 1 #1-5)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

After Professor Xavier’s death, Captain America decides to build a new faction of Avengers that also includes team leaders of X-Men like Rogue and Havok. Uniting as the Uncanny Avengers (or the Avengers Unity Force as they call themselves), their first challenge comes from Captain America’s oldest enemy. Red Skull mysteriously appears from the 1940s with aims of unleashing a mutant genocide.

The first run on Uncanny Avengers serves as the perfect aftermath for a post Avengers vs X-Men world. Captain America yet again proves his leadership skills as he finally manages to forge peace between the Avengers and the mutants.

7 Infinity (Crossover)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Thanos and his fascination with the Infinity Gauntlet have been constantly affecting the history of Marvel comics since the 1990s. Infinity revamps this story for modern readers as Thanos plans to attack Earth while the Avengers are busy warding off other cosmic threats. The superhero team primarily faces off against an ancient race of aliens called the Builders.

Not only does Infinity touch upon the interstellar clashes but also the political impact of such events. The Avengers even end up going to the Galactic Council to discuss the fate of the Builders, as their actions would affect not only Earth but the rest of the universe.

6 New Ultimates (Limited Series)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

After the Ultimatum miniseries (set within the same Ultimate universe), the Black Knight-lead Defenders recover their powers and end up wreaking havoc. Iron Man and Hawkeye are attacked at the Triskelion facility while Thor’s powerful hammer Mjolnir also gets stolen.

The comic is a worthy chapter in the larger Ultimates universe with new challenges even on the personal level. Be it in the visual style or the dialogues, New Ultimates adds a slightly darker tone to the Avengers as compared to more colorful depictions in 90s runs like The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The melodramatic heroism gives way for a more grounded and exhausted batch of Avengers.

5 Avengers 1959 (Limited Series)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Avengers 1959 is a sleek and stylish reinterpretation of the Avengers’ origins. A classic incarnation of Nick Fury leads the batch as they hunt down Nazi war criminals who escaped justice after the Second World War. Fury’s Avengers of the 1950s includes a mixed batch of heroes and antiheroes like Dum Dum Dugan, Silver Sable, and Sabretooth.

The neo-noir aesthetic of Avengers 1959 makes the limited series worth checking out. Further, the characters it explores are otherwise underrepresented in the Marvel continuity. For instance, Dugan is often overshadowed by his peers like Bucky Barnes. Similarly, this comic’s Silver Sable is the father of the more popular version of the character. 1959 gives such characters their moments to shine.

4 Age Of Ultron (Crossover)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

As the title reveals, Age of Ultron is set in a world where the sentient being Ultron and his robotic minions take over the entire planet. In a desperate attempt for survival, the Avengers go into hiding and plan a counter-attack. Interestingly, an alternate timeline is also revealed where Morgan le Fay takes over the world and magic replaces Ultron’s scientific supremacy.

Even though a film of the same name was made, the final episodes of the Disney+ series What…If pay tribute to this modern classic. Ultron has served as a villain for quite some time but it’s this powerful variant of Ultron that added a truly menacing nature behind the extent of his powers.

3 Avengers: The Children’s Crusade (Limited Series)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Even though this is a Young Avengers storyline, it is Wiccan and Speed who play a central part. Questioning their origins and unstable powers, they get convinced that they are reincarnations of a now-dead Scarlet Witch. But as their grandfather Magneto appears on the scene, it becomes evident that their mother is still alive.

Wiccan and Speed’s pursuit of Scarlet Witch offers more backstory to the family while also offering the superhero siblings a new purpose in life. Given that both heroes have now been introduced in as characters in MCU’s WandaVision, readers will be more than interested to know more about these new-age Avengers.

2 Endless Wartime (One-Shot)

Avengers 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

A part of Marvel’s new line of one-shot graphic novels, Endless Wartime pits the main Avengers ensemble against an unlikely group of villainous drones. These drones actually turn out to be Asgardian villains that got reanimated with World War II-era HYDRA technology.

Instead of just fighting off these drones, the comic also touches upon some moral introspection on behalf of Thor and Captain America. Both heroes along with the Avengers have been fighting off threats from this world and the other for decades. But there comes a point when the Captain talks about war and Hawkeye cynically replies, ‘It never ends, Steve. Only old people think things end’. This pretty much sums up the emotional essence of Endless Wartime.

1 Avengers: Standoff (Limited Series)

A group of old and new Avengers team up for unearthing a mystery around the ominous gated community of Pleasant Hill. When Steve Rogers links the suburb with a SHIELD conspiracy, the Avengers find out that the brainwashed inhabitants of Pleasant Hill are not who they seem.

The mysterious buildup and the setting of Standoff would remind readers of films like Pleasantville and The Stepford Wives. Further, the comic proves to be a good opportunity to showcase the changes in the Avengers lineup. Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America as he assumes responsibility as a SHIELD commander. Along with Wilson being the new Captain America, the comic also features Jane Foster as the new Thor.
