Avril Lavigne Is Making A Movie Based On Her Hit Song Sk8r Boi

Singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne is developing a film based on her hit song, “Sk8er Boi.” Lavigne is one of the key musicians in the pop-punk music genre of the early 2000s with her debut album, Let Go, becoming the best-selling album by a Canadian artist in the 21st century. Her music has been featured in a number of television and film products, including the 2006 film, Eragon.

Released in 2002, “Sk8er Boi” tells the story of a girl, who, despite wanting to be with the titular character, rejects him based on what her friends think, only to regret the decision years later after he has become famous. The song was a hit when it was released and reached the Billboard Top 10 in multiple countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The music video was directed by future Hunger Games: Catching Fire director, Francis Lawrence, and the song has become a staple of the pop-punk music movement of the early 2000s.

In an interview with the iHeartRadio podcast, She Has The Voice, via ET Canada, Lavigne revealed she was working on a film adaptation of the song “Sk8er Boi.” Lavinge didn’t reveal any other details on the project, like if she would direct or star in it. She did reveal some inspiration behind the song. Lavigne said:

Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me. And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level…You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps and jocks. It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love. The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”

The project appears to be in the very early stages of development, so no clear direction has been decided or even if a major studio is attached or if it is being planned as an independent feature. In 2006, Lavigne provided a voice-over role in DreamWorks’ Over The Hedge and appeared in Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation, with her last on-screen acting appearance in 2007’s The Flock. Given that the original music video director, Lawrence, has become a big-name filmmaker, it would be fitting for him to helm the project with Lavigne in a producing role and a set of up-and-coming stars to bring the story to life.

Many popular songs have been turned into feature-length films, the most recent high profile example being Last Christmas starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, based on the Wham! song of the same name. Given the narrative nature of Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi,” the film’s plot can be clearly outlined as a potential love story between two young individuals that leads to regret in a semi-doomed tragedy or one where the two characters reconcile after years apart. With the song approaching 20 years since release, the film could be a nostalgic look at a genre of music that inspired an entire generation who are now adults themselves.
