Although there aren’t a lot of characters at the center of Comedy Central’s Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, it’s still difficult to pinpoint who the funniest of the bunch is. Almost everyone who has a prominent role manages to make the audience laugh out loud in basically every episode.

That being said, someone has to be the absolute funniest. You might think it would be Awkwafina’s turn as the titular Nora due to her history of being hilarious but that might not completely be the case. Her father, cousin, grandmother, and friends also bring the laughs in major ways, making this one of the best comedies on TV.

7 Brenda

To be fair, Brenda (Jennifer Esposito) hasn’t had a ton of chances to make fans laugh. She is one of the newest characters on the show, arriving as the girlfriend of Wally. In a lot of ways, she was more of a plot device that helped Wally try new things out in his life but that changed in “Nora Meets Brenda.”

The episode shined a light on Nora’s relationship with her dad’s girlfriends but Brenda worked well as something of a “straight man” in this situation. Nora attempted to sabotage her at every turn but Brenda took everything in stride and some of it was funny. She is the kind of character who isn’t funny on her own but she plays well off of others, like when she spent the day alongside Grandma.

6 Doug

The entire reason for Doug’s (Jon Park) existence in the series is to make the audience laugh. He never gets any major storylines, is mostly just a sideline player, and doesn’t even get any character development or depth. That’s okay though because characters like that are often needed on comedy shows. He has only appeared in a handful of episodes but is considered one of the show’s recurring characters.

The most prominent Doug appearance came in the episode “Vagarina,” as he was the person hanging out with Nora and showing her the song that uses sounds made by her vagina. It’s just the kind of absurd situation that Doug is perfectly suited for. He’s always funny when he’s around and you know he’s just waiting for his next hilarious appearance.

5 Wally

In terms of pure importance to the show, Wally (BD Wong) likely ranks third. As Nora’s father, he’s always there for his daughter with sage advice or just to help her out. Alas, that doesn’t always lend to funny moments or situations, so it holds Wally back from ranking as the most hilarious person around.

Still, Wally has had his fair share of moments. The way he reacts to his outlandish mother and his slacker daughter is always enjoyable, while his struggles to adapt to the changing world are pretty funny. The episode where he told a story about getting bullied also provided the viewers with plenty of reasons to chuckle.

4 Melanie

Nora isn’t someone with a big group of friends but the person who keeps showing up for her that isn’t a family member is Melanie (Chrissie Fit). They rekindled an old bond after realizing that they’re both people who are struggling with life at their age and didn’t have things quite as figured out as they wanted.

That allows Melanie to be funny the same way as Nora since they share many qualities. From getting into wacky antics with Nora to dressing up as Charlie’s Angels to slapping an annoying friend and reminding them of what it meant to be from New York, Melanie is often a scene-stealer in the best way possible.

3 Nora

Shockingly, Nora (Awkwafina) isn’t the first or even second most hilarious person even though she’s the protagonist. The thing that makes Nora so funny is that the show isn’t afraid to poke fun at her for any number of reasons. In fact, most episodes seem to involve Nora being the butt of any joke from the “Vagarina” song to disses about her lack of success.

It also helps that she is constantly getting into wacky shenanigans and scenarios. On top of that, Nora has great reactions to the absurd things around her even though her life is pretty wild on its own. She is prone to shouting her confusion and bewilderment at events. Of course, being played by the always funny Awkwafina is certainly a bonus.

2 Edmund

At first a simple recurring character, Edmund (current SNL cast member Bowen Yang) has become a fan favorite. He’s Nora’s cousin and the two play off each other incredibly well. Edmund has bigger dreams than Nora and lets her know it, while also often mocking her for her sloppiness and somewhat dirty lifestyle even though he’s not far above her in terms of success.

Whenever the two work together, like on their app, it leads to great scenes. Edmund’s failure at being an actor and having to watch Nora do well at it without even trying led to some truly side-splitting moments. His attitude, over-the-top nature, and reactions to everything around him are top-notch.

1 Grandma

While the characters on this series are clearly all funny in their own way, Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) is unquestionably at the top. Every single line delivered by the actor is done in perfect fashion and it makes it so even simple quotes about mundane things are hilarious. Her high-pitched voice only adds to each of her lines.

Grandma doesn’t just deliver great zingers, either. It’s engaging to watch this elderly woman continue to live her life to the fullest, doing everything from tracking down scammers to fighting over phone chargers at the mall and it’s always hilarious. There’s also her great tales from her past, with the best being her love for “Garbage Boy,” played by MCU star Simu Liu.
