Bekah Martinez, who appeared on Arie Luyendyk’s season of The Bachelor, is clapping back at trolls online who have told she isn’t “Mexican enough.” Since Arie sent her home during week seven, Bekah has been busy being a mom. She met her partner Grayston Leonard shortly after her stint on the reality series, and the two have gone on to welcome two children together. Bekah gave birth to their daughter in February 2019 and welcomed their son in June 2020.

When viewers first met Bekah during Arie’s season, she was a huge hit with some, while others didn’t understand how she made it all the way to the top five. Bekah was only 22-years-old when she appeared on the reality series, while Arie was 36. He eventually sent her home after realizing he had stronger feelings for some of the other women, leaving Bekah left heartbroken. Luckily, she has moved on, met the love of her life, and has welcomed two beautiful babies.

During an interview with Parents Latina magazine, Bekah opened up about being called not “Mexican enough” by some of her followers. The 26-year-old admitted these criticisms is something she has dealt with her whole life, noting that she comes from parents who are two different races. Her mother comes from a Lithuanian and Polish background, while her father comes from a Mexican background. Due to her mixed race background, Bekah was often questioned about her ethnicity. “‘Oh, you don’t look Mexican,’ or ‘I wouldn’t have guessed you were Mexican,'” are some of the comments Bekah would receive growing up.

After the cover was released, Bekah received some uncalled-for comments on social media. She received comments on Instagram such as, “It’s nice to be Latin when it’s convenient” and “It’s weird how you get to take up space in the Latina world.. aren’t you half white? Don’t even speak Spanish? Culturally are you even Latina?” The mother of two was very hesitant at first to even appear on the cover due to the backlash she knew she would. Nonetheless, Bekah is proud of her Mexican heritage and wished she could have learned the native language. She also acknowledged that while she is not “visibly Mexican” and hasn’t experienced the struggles and discrimination, she wanted to publicly acknowledge how proud she is to be a Latina.

Bekah’s Mexican heritage has always been a huge part of who she is. She wanted to embrace that part of her publicly. The magazine cover was a great opportunity for her to take that step and embrace her Mexican heritage even if in the past she has been told she doesn’t look the part. Bekah is proud to be a Latina, and now one can take that part of her away.
