Turtle Rock unveiled a slew of new details for their upcoming game Back 4 Blood at their E3 Showcase. The former minds behind the beloved Left 4 Dead franchise are taking things they learned from that series and new ideas they tried in the studio’s debut title Evolve to create what looks to be a bloody good time with its upcoming release.
The Back 4 Blood showcase focused on more details for the game’s PvP aspects, with quick looks into the combat system, weapons, and the various zombie types known as Ridden. The game showed off a PvP mode called Swarm featuring four-on-four lobbies where Cleaners (humans) and Ridden alternate sides in a best-of-three battle to outlast their opponent. There were nine different Ridden introduced, each with unique abilities and mutation upgrades, and the Cleaners also featured special perks to go along with the upgradeable weapons. The large variety these combinations provided should make for diverse matches each round.
As Left 4 Dead has done in the past, Back 4 Blood will utilize a combination of characters and zombies to make the PvP mode interesting, but it will also be adding a number of customization options to add even more variety to the game. Turtle Rock has previously showcased the eight different Cleaners players can choose from, and each will have unique abilities for players to build their team and strategize each new round. This will combine with the weapon customization to make each team of Cleaners as diverse as the team of Ridden they will face off against.
Back 4 Blood: The Zombie Types
The zombies in Back 4 Blood, or Ridden, have nine playable options:
- Reeker – Heavy attacker with fast melee
- Retch – Heavy melee with ranged vomit assault
- Exploder – Heavy melee that explodes on death
- Stinger – Agile climber with light ranged attacks
- Hocker – Agile melee with projectile traps
- Stalker – Agile hunter with subduing pouncing attacks
- Tallboy – Long-range melee with an overhead smash
- Crusher – Long-range melee with an incapacitating grab
- Bruiser – Long-range, frenzied melee with burst smash
In addition to their base individual traits, the Ridden in Back 4 Blood will also unlockable upgrades that players can obtain as they play through rounds, making the landscape ever-evolving. These abilities will allow players to create strategic team builds to play off each others’ skills and best utilize the swarm of zombies to tear apart the Cleaners.
Back 4 Blood: Weapon Customization
Turtle Rock has stated multiple times that it is focusing on adding as much variety as it can to both PvE and PvP, and one of its main ways of doing so is with increasing attention to customization and gunplay. It is unclear currently the total number of guns and upgrades in Back 4 Blood, but thus far Turtle Rock has confirmed there will be a combination of melee weapons, handguns, shotguns, assorted machine guns, and snipers. The total attachment count is also uncertain, but the confirmed upgrades thus far include interchangeable scopes, suppressors, stocks, and sights.
Turtle Rock has said that more weapons and attachments are available as well, and between the character classes, weapons, and Ridden varieties there should be plenty to keep players entertained. The studio has also said it will be rolling out more information on both PvE and PvP over the summer, and with the game’s release pushed back to October, Turtle Rock will have that much more time to polish things following Back 4 Blood’s open beta in August.
