Back to the Future Comes to the World of Manga in New Adaptation

Marty McFly is going Back to the Future in an upcoming manga. The hit science fiction film is getting a new adaptation that is sure to reveal the power of love. Hopefully, Marty is still able to get back in time.

Back to the Future came out thirty-six years ago, in 1985. Since then it has had two film sequels, a Telltale game sequel, and it is considered one of the greatest films of all time. It is a film that has found love with multiple generations – a tradition that Japan seems to want to continue with a new manga announcement.

According to Otakomu, Back to the Future will be a manga adaptation released in Japan. This adapted version will be written by Ichiro Omiya with illustrations by Zerogo Iwamoto. The text will be directed towards an elementary and middle school audience, bringing the story of the film to a new generation. There isn’t much as far as description goes, but the revealed cover seems to hint that it will be a direct film-to-page translation.

Doc Brown and Marty are present, as well as Doc Brown’s dog, Einstein – who is riding in the DeLorean. Also present on the cover is Back to the Future’s Hill Valley Courthouse, which is the home of the iconic clock tower. The flyer on the bottom right corner reads “Save the Clock Tower”, throwing back to the Hill Valley Preservation Society’s efforts to preserve the clock tower. Each of these visual cues hint at this being a true-to-film adaptation, instead of a spin-off story or a sequel manga. Several manga that continue the stories of films in some way have been released lately, but none quite like this. TOKYOPOP is about to release a Nightmare Before Christmas sequel manga, however, that is already slated for a North American release and it’s for a stop-motion animated film that Disney regularly promotes. This isn’t a regular occurrence for a science fiction comedy live action film produced within the United States.

Regardless of Back to the Future’s country of origin, a North American translation for this title has not yet been announced, so it is unknown if audiences there will be able to enjoy this adaptation. However, with the popularity of the film and a rise in manga sales within North America, it seems highly likely that a translation could be licensed and available sometime in the future. Fans of Back to the Future who also read manga are definitely going to be interested in this title and it would be a shame if it never crossed back over the sea to be enjoyed in a new format. Everyone still wants to see Marty get back in time!

This Back to the Future manga is slated for release in Japan on August 18, 2021.
