A spooky Fallout 76 creation themed after the iconic Bates Motel has arrived just in time for the Halloween season. The structure was built through the C.A.M.P. system in the controversial title, which has seen many improvements, according to a Fallout 76 designer.

Fallout 76 was launched back in Fall 2018, garnering mixed reviews. The game was positioned as a massive online multiplayer version of a Fallout game, featuring the signature old-school apocalyptic charm that the series is known for. However, things like the game’s lack of NPCs and shallow quest design left many players unsatisfied. While the game fell short of its RPG predecessors when it came to gameplay and story, some gamers have found enjoyment in the C.A.M.P. building feature, which functions as an offshoot of Fallout 4’s popular Settlement system. These robust crafting mechanics and the newly released Fallout Worlds feature have added a lot to the game in terms of player agency and control.

A Fallout 76 player known as Wanderess has harnessed the C.A.M.P. system to create a fun recreation of Bates Motel, from Alfred Hitchcock’s legendary film Psycho. In a series of screenshots posted to Twitter, Wanderess shows off a selection of the hotel’s rooms. The spaces are filled with creepy mannequins and kitsch Americana. Wanderess appears to have committed to the idea of having this be a hotel, with some of the rooms featuring both twin and full beds. A lounge and lobby have also been built.

The world of Fallout might actually be the perfect match for something like the Bates Motel, as the games’ eerie theme and run-down aesthetic align with the haunting and claustrophobic architecture of Hitchcock’s fictional motel. Of course, the Fallout games take a much more fantastical approach to horror than the 1960s classic, with science-fiction staples like mutations featuring in Fallout 76. Still, there is some synergy between the two properties.

The jury is still out on whether Fallout 76 is a game that can stand alongside Bethesda’s other instant classics like Skyrim or Fallout 3; the game certainly sold well, but its buggy launch, strange design decisions, and live-service approach have left it mired in controversy. That said, the inclusion of things like the C.A.M.P. feature seems to have been a success with players and has lead to fun and creative content in ways that mirror other smash-hit titles like Minecraft. This Bates Motel build is a great example of the kinds of unique creations players can craft in the game, and is hopefully a sign of more cool content to come.
