Batman and Superman were once the two most popular superheroes. This has changed in recent times due to the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, Batman can still boast of being the superhero with the most appearances on the big and small screens.

Dozens of animated and live-action movies and TV shows have been made about the prince of Gotham. And in all of these productions, he has had to fight all kinds of villains. Here are those that have been much better in live-action, and those that were better animated.

10 Live-Action: Bane

Heath Ledger’s Joker is often seen as the greatest DC villain to ever appear on screen, but Tom Hardy’s Bane was quite good too. Perhaps the only thing that prevented Hardy’s character from achieving legendary status was that he wasn’t a smart talker like the Joker, and he was barely audible under the mask.

Despite the minor flaws, the portrayal of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises was still better than his portrayal in all the animated TV shows. In the DC animated universe, Bane is often a henchman who supports other peoples’ goals rather than furthering his own. He is a former inmate at a Cuban prison who was chosen to be part of a government program meant to create super soldiers.

9 Animated: The Riddler

When Jim Carrey was cast as The Riddler in Batman Forever, he was at the height of his popularity. His facial expressions and voice projections were good as usual in the film, but the screenplay didn’t really give him much to do. The same can’t be said of the animated Riddler.

While in the movie, the villain is a former Wayne Enterprises employee who is seen to have mannerisms that are similar to the Joker, he is portrayed as a trickster in the DC animated universe. He almost kills Batman on several occasions, making him a much formidable foe.

8 Live-Action: Penguin

Danny DeVito’s take on the supervillain Penguin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns wasn’t so well received, and for a while, the animated Penguin in Batman: The Animated Series was considered to be far more interesting. All this changed when Robin Lord Taylor played the villain in Gotham.

Taylor’s Penguin easily outshined all the other Batman villains on the show. While Penguin doesn’t have a background story in the animated series, Gotham chronicles his rise from a small-time crook and Fish Mooney’s henchman to a major tuxedo-wearing crime boss in the city.

7 Animated: Mr. Freeze

Mr. Freeze has been voiced by Michael Ansara in several different versions of the DC animated universe. To get an idea of how much better the animated version of Mr. Freeze has been, “Heart of Ice,” the episode of Batman: The Animated Series that introduced the villain, won an Emmy for “Outstanding Writing In An Animated Program.”

The animated Mr. Freeze is also slimmer compared to the live-action version in Batman & Robin that was deliberately made buff to accommodate Schwarzenegger’s physique. Schwarzenegger’s take on the character is often cited as one of his worst ever performances.

6 Live-Action: Ra’s Al Ghul

Ra’s Al Ghul is the leader of The League Of Assassins, an organization that trained Bruce Wayne. He has been portrayed by different actors in live-action, and all of these portrayals have been extremely good. The villain has appeared in Batman Begins, Gotham, Arrow, and Legends Of Tomorrow.

Liam Neeson’s portrayal of the character is the most popular one. In Batman Begins—the first film in the Dark Knight Trilogy—Ghul was Bruce Wayne’s mentor who taught him martial arts. Neeson was meant to reprise his role, but couldn’t do so due to scheduling conflicts.

5 Animated: Poison Ivy

Dr. Pamela Isley, AKA Poison Ivy, has appeared in Batman & Robin and the series Gotham. While the botanist has had interesting storylines in the live-action productions, she has been better off as Wayne’s enemy in Batman: The Animated Series and as Harley Quinn’s ally in Harley Quinn.

Poison Ivy’s interest is safeguarding plant life. She has no interest in money and power. She only goes after those who destroy plants. But she’s so brutal when exacting her revenge that Batman has to intervene. Ivy is also able to control plants and use them as weapons.

4 Live-Action: Two-Face

Tommy Lee Jones might have been a Razzie contender with his portrayal of Two-Face in Batman Forever, but Aaron Eckhart made audiences love the former cop-turned-villain again. The Joker grabbed all the headlines in The Dark Knight, but Harvey Dent/Two-Face left his mark too.

What made Two-Face so good was the character development. He wasn’t a psychopath from the beginning. He was focused on being a good cop, but then tragedy struck and he ended up breaking bad. And since Joker survived, he offered audiences the satisfaction of seeing the mandatory villain death.

3 Animated: The Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter has the ability to control the minds of people. He is also obsessed with the story of Alice In Wonderland. He has appeared in Gotham as well as the live-action 1960s Batman series. However, the tech genius shines best in Batman: The Animated Series.

Kevin Conroy—who voiced Batman in the series—has confessed that “Perchance To Dream” is his favorite episode in the entire series. In it, Bruce Wayne wakes up to a world where he is engaged to Selina Kyle and his parents are still alive and well. He soon finds out that this is all part of the Mad Hatter’s games.

2 Live-Action: The Joker

Batman 5 Villains Who Were The Best In LiveAction (& 5 Villains Who Were Better Animated)

This is a close call, but the live-action of the Joker has to take the cake. The animated Joker—as voiced by Mark Hamill—is legendary, but his take is the only good one among all the animated version versions of Batman’s greatest foe. However, the live-action Joker has now been portrayed magnificently three different times.

It started with Jack Nicholson in Batman, followed by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and then Joaquin Phoenix took all the awards due to his outstanding performance in Joker. Ceasar Romero’s version of the clown prince of crime in the 1960s might have been cartoonish, but it was widely praised too.

1 Animated: Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie’s performances as Harley Quinn have been exemplary, but she’s been limited by poor scripts. Quinn was the only interesting character in Suicide Squad, and while Birds Of Prey wasn’t a bad film, there wasn’t enough going to make it a classic.

Meanwhile, the animated series Harley Quinn has been so good that some critics have compared it to the award-winning Batman: The Animated Series. Harley, as voiced by Kayley Cuoco, is almost flawless. The fact that the rest of the DC characters, including Batman, are occasionally brought in to fit into her story makes her even more appealing.
