Warning! Spoilers for Batman ’89 by DC Comics below

Marlon Wayans’ Robin just made his comic book debut, as the long-lost character who was supposed to appear in Tim Burton’s shelved third Batman film just showed up in the new Batman ’89 by DC Comics. In his first appearance, DC’s newest old Robin took on Batman head-on, as he challenged the Dark Knight believing he was up to no good.

Before being replaced by Joel Schumacher after Batman Returns, Tim Burton hired Marlon Wayans to play Robin in the third installment of the Batman franchise. Despite never appearing in any of the Batman films, Wayans still reportedly earned $100,000 for the film. It seemed Wayans’ version of Robin was never going to happen – until DC Comics announced a new Batman ’89 comic that directly followed up after the second Batman film. The comic features characters, actors, and the Gotham City that Burton created in his own Batman universe. The new comic includes Wayans’ Robin, Prince as a member of the Joker gang, and Billy Dee Williams’ Harvey Dent fully becoming Two-Face.

In Batman ’89 #1 by Sam Hamm, Joe Quinones, Leonardo Ito, and Clayton Cowles, after another attack by Joker’s gang, Harvey Dent calls on Bruce Wayne to help him take down Batman and oust Jim Gordon. As the National Guard patrols the streets trying to take down Batman, the hero doesn’t stop his quest to stop crime in Gotham. After seeing a store owner trying to shoot a youngster who stole diapers and baby food, Batman confronts him. As Batman interrogates him and realizes it was a crime of need, not passion, a masked figure arrives and attacks him.

Robin kicks Batman in the face outside on the first escape and tells him it’s “not your house” and to “knock next time.” Batman is forced to escape, as Robin tells the young man who stole the baby food that he’s “sorry for the trouble” while giving him eight dollars, all of the money he had on him. Meanwhile, as Batman reaches the bottom of the fire escape, the National Guard notices him and calls for his arrest.

While Robin never shows his face, his costume matches his ensemble shown in previous teases for Batman ’89. It’s quite the debut for the hero who will become Robin, as he shows no fear in going up against Batman, as he believes the Caped Crusader is trying to stop a man who just wanted to feed his family. By stopping Batman and giving the family all the money he had, the new Robin shows serious heart, which is undoubtedly part of why he’s recruited into the Bat-Family later in the series. Readers can see the new Marlon Wayans’ Robin debut in Batman ’89, which is in stores now.
