Batman & Joker Justice League Snyder Cut Scene Details Revealed

The details of Batman and Joker’s highly-anticipated scene in Zack Snyder’s Justice League have been revealed. In a little over a month, director Zack Snyder’s long-awaited Justice League will finally make its debut on HBO Max. This 4-hour film will be what Snyder had originally intended to create before he exited the film in 2017. It will be vastly different from the theatrical cut, introducing alternate storylines and featuring several new characters. While some were teased to be part of Snyder’s original film, like Martian Manhunter (Harry Lennix) and Darkseid (Ray Porter), last year’s reshoots brought in at least one major surprise: Jared Leto’s Joker.

Leto stepped into the role of the iconic DC villain for 2016’s Suicide Squad. Much was discussed about his appearance and approach to the part beforehand, but the finished product gave him a shortened role that not many people responded favorably to. It was unclear if Leto would ever play the Joker again in the DCEU, which is why the news of his inclusion in the Snyder Cut came as such a surprise. Fans have been abuzz abut the Joker’s Justice League story ever since, and now new details have emerged.

As part of Vanity Fair’s reveal of the Joker’s full Justice League look, Snyder delved into the circumstances behind his part in the movie. Instead of appearing in the present day, the Joker will be a part of the Knightmare timeline, which is an alternate dystopian future where Earth has fallen into Darkseid’s hands. This dream sequence is experienced by Batman (Ben Affleck), and to him, Joker represents a “Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come, supplying motivation through terror.” Snyder elaborated, saying this:

“The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman. It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is. That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.”

Aside from a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in Suicide Squad, the DCEU’s Batman and Joker have largely remained separate from each other. As Snyder said, he couldn’t let that happen, hence the inclusion of Joker in Justice League. While it sounds like the scene won’t dive all the way into their violent history, it does look like it will provide new shades to both figures. Snyder’s comments indicate this Justice League moment will be more character-driven, and that’s really compelling.

If Snyder were to continue with his original DCEU plans, there would’ve been more of an exploration of Batman and Joker’s relationship. While it’s unfortunate that will likely never come to pass, it’s exciting to know Snyder got the opportunity to do a little bit with his Justice League. The Joker scene further fills in the Knightmare timeline, and it will reveal more about Batman’s characterization. Plus, it’ll feature a way creepier Joker. Sounds like everything Snyder fans have been looking forward to.
