Batman Reveals The Secret Origin Of The Scarecrow

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman #113

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Batman, the Dark Knight learns the secret origins of Jonathan Crane’s Scarecrow and the inception of the current Fear State he’s unleashed upon Gotham City. Rather than using his traditional fear toxins, Scarecrow has turned to new methods such as mind control and mass manipulation to push Gotham citizens to the brink to see if they can evolve and become stronger. However, the Dark Knight is determined to stop Crane before his experiment becomes irreversible, and his new ally Ghost-Maker just helped to reveal the full extent of Crane’s Fear State theory… and its dark implications.

In previous issues of Batman, the Dark Knight was captured by Scarecrow, taken hostage, and subjected to Crane’s new mind-control techniques, effectively allowing him to hack into the fear centers of Bruce Wayne’s brain. Meanwhile, Scarecrow began his work in Gotham, sending out public messages containing false messages meant to rile and stir up panic in the city while the Magistrate’s paramilitary forces took to the streets, escalating the fear even further. While Batman eventually managed to escape, Batman #113 from writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jimenez sees him compromised, needing Ghost-Maker to enter his mind via his own mind-control technology to purge the effects of Crane from Bruce’s mind.

Once Ghost-Maker seemingly purges Crane’s control he takes the time to show Batman the origins of Crane’s Fear State as he’d spent a week with the future Scarecrow when Crane was just a graduate student researching the true nature of fear itself. Crane detailed the Fear State to Ghost-Maker, a theory built around the idea of mass manipulation via terror in favor of evolving society to make it stronger (provided it survives being in a prolonged state of pure and unbridled fear). Crane’s theory also necessitated a central figure he called the Scarecrow, confirming the origins of his sinister moniker.

The first step of Scarecrow’s theory was accomplished thanks to the Joker and the recent Joker War, which served to create the widespread fear catalyst, serving as the needed primer. Crane then began working with Simon Saint and his Magistrate program to seize the media outlets., controlling the narrative and keeping Gotham afraid. Thirdly, Crane himself served as the initial Scarecrow before taking over Peacekeeper-01, whom he now controls and can use to funnel the abstract fear into the being Gotham needs to overcome. At the present, Scarecrow has also co-opted the public messages of Oracle, speaking lies such as his reports of Batman’s death, continuing to subject Gotham to relentless fear, pushing them ever closer to the “purity” of the Fear State.

Clearly, all the pieces are in place for Crane to finally test his mass manipulation theory that the scientific journals refused to publish, though it remains to be seen if his theory will prove true. Either way, Batman’s not going to take that chance with his city, doing all he can and calling upon his Bat-Family to help him before Crane’s Fear State comes to pass. Regardless of what happens in future issues, it is pretty interesting to see Crane’s theory broken down and its creation being so tied to his own origins as the Scarecrow.
