Batman Succeeded In Justice League Where Iron Man Failed In Infinity War

Batman succeeded in assembling a team in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a feat Iron Man failed to accomplish in Avengers: Infinity War. The DC ensemble film got another telling this year through the release of the Snyder Cut, after original director Zack Snyder’s intended vision for the film was significantly changed by Joss Whedon’s reshoots in 2017. This iteration is generally deemed superior out of the two, with better character development, better visual effects, and a more cohesive story. That said, there are also elements that are consistent in both versions, including Bruce Wayne’s core mission in the movie.

Springboarded by the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder’s Justice League tackles what the world looks like after the Man of Steel’s heroic death. Wanting to honor his death after he learned that a bigger threat is coming, Bruce Wayne goes on a mission to find superheroes for his team who can protect the world from what’s coming. Thanks to Lex Luthor’s files on other powered beings, he and Wonder Woman begin recruiting them one by one until the Justice League was formed in the end to fight Steppenwolf.

While Batman initially met some resistance from Aquaman and Wonder Woman with Cyborg, he ultimately succeeded in assembling a team. This was something that Iron Man failed to do leading up to the events of Infinity War. On the heels of the Avengers’ break up in Captain America: Civil War, Tony spent the next two years trying to assemble a brand new team as revealed in the Infinity War Prelude comic.

While Captain America and the Secret Avengers operated underground and traveled the world in the hopes of continuing their superhero oath, Iron Man continued to work on preparing for Thanos — whom by that time was merely a threat with no name. Unfortunately, the MCU’s genius, billionaire’s efforts didn’t go anywhere. Vision was slipping in and out of radar to secretly meet up with Wanda and Spider-Man turned down his offer to be an official Avengers member. Black Panther was focused on his own affairs in Wakanda and War Machine was going through physical rehabilitation. Convinced that what’s coming was something bigger and worse than anything Earth had faced, Tony did all he can to equip himself for the inevitable battle, hence why he was able to come up with his most high-tech suit in Mark 50.

Unfortunately for Iron Man, doing things the best he could on his own wasn’t enough to stop Thanos. In the end, the Mad Titan succeeded in wiping half of life in the universe, handing the Avengers their first real defeat. It’s very likely the Avengers would have won if they were more united when the villain attacked, and while there’s no definitive answer to this, seeing what went down in Justice League hints that the chances are pretty good. Of course, it still boiled down to Iron Man deciding to sacrifice his life to fully eliminate the alien’s threat, but he wouldn’t have had that chance had it not been for everyone’s efforts — from Ant-Man who first floated the idea of the time heist to Black Widow who died on Vormir to acquire the Soul Stone.

While Iron Man failed to assemble a team, however, in Avengers: Infinity War, everything ultimately worked things out for the hero with Thanos’ defeat in Endgame. But it remains to be seen for Batman’s case, at least in the Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While his initial efforts to protect Earth against Steppenwolf succeeded thanks to his successful recruitment of his fellow DCEU heroes, there’s still a bigger threat waiting to attack in Darkseid. Based on whaT Snyder has revealed thus far about the scrapped sequels for the WB ensemble film, Bruce Wayne’s arc would also end the same way Tony’s did in the MCU — death.
