Batman: The Animated Series turned Kevin Conroy’s Batman into an icon of the character. While everyone loves his Batman, what made the show work was the well-written side characters and villains. The many characters of the show had so much to offer that they didn’t even need Batman.

This led to fan-favorite episodes known as Batman-Lite episodes. These are the episodes that shift focus to the villains, other heroes, or even just a random side character. In some of them, Batman is barely even featured which can make for a refreshing episode. The question is: which ones are the best?

10 P.O.V.

As the title suggests, the episode is about a story told from different perspectives. After a bust goes wrong, Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya tell their sides of the story. It’s an episode that showcases how even the smallest characters can be strong leads.

Harvey Bullock became such a fan-favorite that he remained a recurring character. The character even got a live-action debut on Fox’s Gotham as one of the main characters. Renee Montoya even became a classic character who evolved into her own hero. Both lead the episode well with very little involvement of Batman.

9 Holiday Knights

The second Christmas-themed episode of the series. This time, it’s an anthology of stories taking place from Christmas to New Year’s Day. Each story focuses on a different character and how they spend the holidays.

While it’s not as much of a holiday classic as Christmas With The Joker, it does give viewers that comfy, warm feeling of the season. All of the stories are fun to watch with the best one being about Batgirl and Clayface. A decent first episode for The New Batman Adventures.

8 Joker’s Millions

The more of Mark Hamill’s Joker, the better. Joker’s Millions is almost entirely about him and focuses on how he reacts to inheriting the fortune of a dead mob boss. Since it is a technically legal action, there is nothing Batman can do about it much to his dismay.

Joker splurges but then he learns that he inherited only a small amount of real money; the rest is all fake. This makes him a target of the IRS who scares him more than Batman does. It’s a hilarious episode that showcases Hamill’s range with the Joker.

7 Growing Pains

Tim Drake’s Robin was one of the best things about The New Batman Adventures. Easily his best episode is Growing Pains; in it, he’s trying to protect a runaway girl from her menacing father. The friendship that blossoms between Tim and this girl feels genuine, making one root for her freedom.

There are twists and turns involved that lead to a tear-jerking ending. Without spoiling, the episode is dark on purpose to teach Tim a moral and show just how strong the character is.

6 Joker’s Favor

Again, the more Joker, the better. In Joker’s Favor, a frustrated blue-collar worker name Charlie is cut off in traffic; he curses out the driver. A big mistake since it turns out to be the Clown Prince Of Crime. Joker catches up with the man and agrees to let him live but he owes Joker a favor.

The rest of the episode is focused on the man dealing with this favor. Joker even threatens the man’s family. This all culminates to an amazing climax where Charlie takes on the Joker. To hear Mark Hamill’s Joker beg for Batman’s help is just priceless. The punchline that follows is even better.

5 I’ve Got Batman In My Basement

Batman is in most of this episode but he’s not the star. Instead, it focuses on a young boy named Sherman who runs his own detective agency with his friend. Sherman finds the Penguin who battles with Batman. Batman is poisoned and left incapacitated so Sherman brings the vigilante home.

As the title suggests, he keeps Batman safe in his basement. The rest of the episode plays out like a DC universe version of Home Alone and it makes Sherman into a great one-shot character. It’s actually one of the few times Penguin was a good villain.

4 See No Evil

A new and quite unique take on The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. See No Evil guest stars Tremors star Michael Gross as Lloyd Ventrix, a con who uses an invisibility suit to rob. Ventrix does this as a means to make more money who he can reunite with his daughter.

Unlike Mr. Freeze, however, Ventrix is not a sympathetic villain. He is a mean, dark, and psychotic villain who takes it too far. Of course, this warrants Batman’s attention.

3 Mad Love

It’s impossible to leave this one off the list. The final episode of the series is also one of the best. Harley Quinn began as a quirky little henchwoman for the Joker but evolved into a fan-favorite. Mad Love is entirely about her origin story and how Harleen Quinzel fell in love.

It’s dark, it’s twisted, and it makes one feel sorry for the woman. Harleen could have been an upstanding citizen. And it’s because of this episode, Harley Quinn was introduced in the comics and the movies.

2 Almost Got ‘Im

Joker, Two-Face, Penguin, Poison Ivy, and Killer Croc playing poker and telling stories. How can this not be a nugget of gold? The banter between all the villains is priceless with all voice-actors giving their 100% as always.

Each villain tells a story about how they almost got Batman. The different stories are all great to see as well. There’s even a twist in there that most will not see coming. It is an absolute classic episode that showcases that these villains are as much of the stars of the show.

1 Two-Face

Harvey Dent began as a supporting character in other episodes. This made his character much more meaningful, especially for his best friend Bruce Wayne. So when Harvey finally falls from grace to become Two-Face, it’s both scary and tragic.

Two-Face features a lot of similarities to the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie. It’s pretty much all from his point of view and acts as a character study. Harvey’s succumb to his insanity makes for some of the darkest writing on the show.
