Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice 5 Characters With The Most (& 5 With The Least) Screentime

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released in 2016 as the second film in the DC Extended Universe. Directed by Zack Snyder, the film not only brought back Superman from Man of Steel, but it also saw the DCEU debut Batman and Wonder Woman. This was the first time Batman was on-screen since the end of the massively popular Dark Knight Trilogy, and it was Wonder Woman’s live-action film debut. There were also numerous cameos from upcoming members of the Justice League. So, how does the screentime play out for each character?

This article will use the “Ultimate Edition” of the film, which is about half an hour longer than the theatrical cut. This version features new and extended scenes, as well as characters and subplots that weren’t in the theatrical version. It results in a more complete story for this momentous occasion of “The Big Three” of DC being on-screen together. A character doesn’t have to be on screen for the screentime to count, as long as they are intercut in the scene.

10 Steppenwolf – 0:15

Steppenwolf appears in the Ultimate Cut for just a quarter of a minute. When Lex Luthor is arrested inside the Kryptonian ship, he is seen with a display of Steppenwolf and the three Mother Boxes, apparently contacting him. This ties into the scene where Lex says “the bell cannot be unrung,” as well as the plot of Justice League.

Ciaran Hinds didn’t portray Steppenwolf in BvS, as the character just had a brief CGI cameo. However, the scene is a powerful setup for what’s to come in the series.

9 Arthur Curry / Aquaman – 0:28

Jason Momoa’s DCEU debut as Aquaman came in the scene where Diana opens the LexCorp files. At just 28 seconds, the character has the shortest appearance of the Justice League members in this film. Aquaman is seen emerging from a submarine and striking the camera filming him with his trident.

Momoa reprised the role in both Justice League and the character’s solo film. He originally auditioned for the role of Batman, and despite not getting it, Zack Snyder liked it so much he offered Momoa the role of Aquaman. Momoa is set to appear in Aquaman 2.

8 Victor Stone / Cyborg and Silas Stone – 0:47

Cyborg and his father share an entry here, as they are both are screen together for the entirety of their cameos. The footage of Victor Stone becoming Cyborg is from a single point of view as Silas Stone conducts his research.

Ray Fisher appeared in Justice League and was the most outspoken member of the cast when it came to supporting the release of the Snyder Cut of the film. Recounting experiences of a toxic environment on the Joss Whedon reshoots, including bullying and racism, Fisher has found the support of many fans and fellow actors.

7 Jenet Klyburn – 1:00

Jena Malone plays Jenet Klyburn in the Ultimate Edition only, with her two scenes being cut from the theatrical version. While she has only one minute on screen, her role adds a lot to the plot of the film.

Klyburn is a scientist who helps Lois Lane study the bullet she finds in the desert, which leads to Lois’s discovery that Lex was behind it. Klyburn also informs Lois that the bomb in Wallace Keefe’s wheelchair was encased in lead, which explains why Superman could neither see nor stop the explosion.

6 Barry Allen / The Flash – 1:02

Barry Allen appears twice in the film. The first time is immediately after the “Knightmare” sequence where Bruce dreams of Darkseid’s invasion, and then Barry appears to him from the future. The second is when Diana watches the LexCorp file footage, where we see Barry stop a convenience store robbery.

Ezra Miller reprised his role in both Suicide Squad and Justice League. He also had a cameo in the Arrowverse crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” meeting Grant Gustin’s Flash. This was the first time the TV shows and films throughout the history of DC Comics had crossed over, with it being firmly established that all DC shows and movies take place in the same multiverse. Miller will next appear in The Flash solo film.

5 Diana Prince / Wonder Woman – 18:20

The fifth-most seen character in BvS is Wonder Woman in her live-action film debut. Viewers might not expect her to be in the top 5, as she only appears sparingly throughout the first three-quarters of the movie. However, Diana’s part in the fight against Doomsday adds up to a lot of screentime.

Gal Gadot was immediately popular as the character. She’s gone on to appear in Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Wonder Woman 1984. Not counting Superman’s faceless cameo in Shazam!, Wonder Woman currently has the most appearances in the DCEU at four.

4 Lex Luthor – 28:09

Jesse Eisenberg brought the classic Superman villain into the DCEU, featuring in nearly half an hour in the Ultimate Edition. While slightly older than Michael Rosenbaum in season one of Smallville, Eisenberg was still the youngest version of the character seen in a film.

This version of Luthor is more eccentric, and his motives are very secretive for the majority of the movie. The Ultimate Edition goes even deeper into how far Luthor went to pit Batman and Superman against each other. Wunmi Mosaka, who appears in just one scene as Kahina Ziri in the theatrical cut, features in a subplot in the Ultimate Edition. Her character reveals to Senator Finch that she lied about what Superman did in the desert because of Lex Luthor’s threats. This adds to Finch’s tension when Luthor fails to appear at the Senate hearing.

3 Lois Lane – 35:53

The characters with the top two amounts of screentime in this movie should be no surprise, so who takes third? That goes to Lois Lane, played by Amy Adams. Lois is seen investigating Luthor’s involvement in the theatrical cut, but the Ultimate Edition adds even more for Lois to do. Not only does she have the bullet from the desert examined, but she personally discovers evidence that Wallace Keefe didn’t know his wheelchair had a bomb in it.

Adams had previously appeared as the character in Man of Steel, reprising her character here and in Justice League. Lois not only provides a lot of heart for the story, but she ends up being a big part of the film’s third act. She’s also the last character seen in the film.

2 Clark Kent / Superman – 57:41

While this film may have started as Man of Steel 2 on some level, this wasn’t just a Superman movie. However, many threads are picked up from the previous film, meaning the Man of Steel himself has a lot of screentime. Superman has taken on a permanent role as a hero of Earth, but many people question how much he should get involved, if at all.

Superman’s sacrifice at the end of the film leaves a big impact on the DCEU. Not only does the world finally see Superman for the hero he is, but Batman is inspired to become a better hero again. Henry Cavill appears again in Justice League, with his future DCEU involvement still unknown.

1 Bruce Wayne / Batman – 1:12:48

Since this film had to introduce Batman into the DCEU, it’s no surprise that the character appears the most in the film. His large amount of screentime is made up of his origin, his vendetta against Superman, and his ultimate redemption, or the start of it. Ben Affleck was seen as a welcome addition to the series, giving fans a popular on-screen version of the Dark Knight.

Batman and Superman naturally have a fight in the film, hence the title. Their fight is largely uninterrupted, including a sequence of longer than seven straight minutes with just these two characters. It’s no wonder they dominate the character screentime rankings for the movie.
