Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman #111

In the latest issue of DC’s Batman, the Dark Knight’s very future is deviating away from what was seen in DC’s Future State, which offered a look at Gotham five years into the future. Additionally, it’s all thanks to one surprising member from Batman’s rogues gallery, who’s turned on the paramilitary force that had been growing in power for several issues, a dark sign that Gotham was headed towards its dark destiny has a fascist state with outlawed vigilantes. However, it now looks as though Future State was the second-worst thing that could happen to Gotham, as it’s now entered Scarecrow’s Fear State.

In previous issues of Batman from writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jimenez, the Magistrate has been growing in power, gaining more and more of a foothold in the city as Gotham’s Mayor Nakano gives them more freedom to operate. This naturally serves as dark foreshadowing, seeing as how the Magistrate is fully in control of Gotham five years down the line, where they’ve allegedly killed Batman and vigilantes are outlawed. However, the work of Scarecrow has served as a large motivator, making Gotham so frightened of yet another major attack on the city that they’re more than willing to put their lives and freedoms in the hands of the Magistrate (which was done without a single drop of Scarecrow’s fear toxin). As a result, it makes sense that the Magistrate’s founder Simon Saint was secretly working with Scarecrow supposedly towards their mutual benefit.

However, Batman #111 reveals a drastic turning point in the expectations for Future State, providing the first major deviation from the Future State timeline from any DC Comics titles thus far. While Batman and his allies were doing all they can to stop the Magistrate from going to war with the Unsanity Collective, Mayor Nakano officially sanctions the paramilitary force to dismantle and eliminate all vigilantism in Gotham, seemingly the final nail in the coffin for Batman’s future being headed towards the assumed darkness featured in Future State. However, it seems as though Dr. Crane has other plans, despite Simon Saint referencing Scarecrow’s role within the Magistrate as a consultant which was seen in the Future State titles set in Gotham’s future.

Not only does Scarecrow reveal his new plans to go rogue with his Fear State to push Gotham even further, but he also injects the highest dose of his fear toxin he’s ever administered to a single person into Peacekeeper-01, the leader of the Magistrate in Gotham’s Future State. As a result, it seems as though the fate of Gotham and Batman’s future has drastically shifted, as it’s now headed for Scarecrow’s Fear State as opposed to Future State which may be way worse, especially considering all of the flash-forwards seen in previous issues where Dr. Crane has been torturing Batman, keeping the Dark Knight locked away and full of his fear toxins.

This surprise move from Scarecrow and its creation of an alternate future path for Gotham is going to be interesting, as it’s doubtful that PK-01 will be able to come back from Crane’s attack. Not only that, but Simon Saint appears to have truly lost control of the situation. That being said, now is the time for Batman and his family of vigilantes to win the trust and faith of the public in a big way, earning back much of the goodwill they’ve lost after so many major attacks on the city in Gotham’s past, provided the Dark Knight can escape Scarecrow’s clutches.
