Batmans New Threat is More Realistic Than Nolans Dark Knight Trilogy

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman #113

Batman’s new threat is potentially more realistic than Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Fear State has come to Gotham City, and Jonathan Crane’s Scarecrow has determined to use new tactics to make Batman’s city afraid. Rather than using his usual fear toxins, Crane has turned to mass manipulation and misinformation, taking control of the public narrative to push Gotham further into more fear, panic, and trauma than it’s ever experienced before. As a result, Fear State has Scarecrow taking advantage of some very real weaknesses in society that exist in real life, mirroring actual dangers that could potentially make this new event more realistic than Nolan’s films.

In recent issues of Batman from James Tynion IV and Jorge Jimenez, Jonathan Crane has decided to test a theory he developed on fear as a graduate student. Using a major widespread source of fear as the catalyst (in this case the Joker’s recent and devastating Joker War), Crane believes society can be made malleable if that fear is cultivated and stoked further. After this major event primes the fear, the media is used as a tool to control the narrative, continuing the panic and paranoia so that the fear can’t be diminished (something Crane has already done in the aftermath of Joker’s attack). Crane then suggests that the fear can reach a point of clarity he calls the “Fear State” where society’s fears can be confronted, making it stronger as a result (theoretically). It’s also possible that the Fear State could just destroy a society like Gotham and it could tear itself apart, a risk Batman is unwilling to take as he works with his allies to stop Crane before his test becomes irreversible regardless of the outcome.

However, Batman #113 sees Scarecrow continuing to control the narrative, having hacked into Barbara Gordon’s Oracle network and using her systems to speak to Gotham all at once. As such, he’s been providing all sorts of lies and misinformation, such as his claims that Batman is dead and that citizens will soon be dragged out into the streets by the Magistrate forces to be infected by Crane’s toxins (which he isn’t even using). As a result, the fear created by his false information mirrors real-life dangers that are being experienced in the current era (which seems to be an intentional comparison on Tynion’s part). Likewise, because this kind of fear caused by misinformation is such a real concern, it’s possible that Fear State could end up being more of a realistic threat than those seen in Nolan’s Dark Knight films, which is significant considering the trilogy’s more grounded stakes and villains.

As of this latest issue, it certainly seems as though Scarecrow is succeeding in his experiment, creating his desired mass panic and terror as he attempts to push Gotham to that point of clarity he’s hypothesized. However, it’s not hard to see these same tactics being applied in the real world that’s already full of fear and misinformation in the midst of a catalyzing global pandemic which seems to be part of the underlying message Tynion is trying to communicate with this new arc. Using the voices Gotham has always been able to trust, the misinformation has run rampant and the city is going into a frenzy.

Assuming Crane doesn’t end up using more fictitious methods, it looks as though the threat of Batman’s Fear State will be one of the Dark Knight’s most realistic threats on par with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films (if not more so). In any case, the dangers and fears motivated by Scarecrow are bigger than ever before and he hasn’t even used a drop of his normal toxin, proving that some very real methods of inducing fear are perhaps stronger in the long run.
