Battlefield 2042 Has No Campaign Or Battle Royale Mode

Battlefield 2042 will not feature a campaign nor a battle royale, according to DICE. The developer has chosen to focus exclusively on its multiplayer offerings for Battlefield 2042, providing what appears to be the biggest entry in the series with enhanced player counts, massive maps, and much more.

Previous rumor suggested that Battlefield 2042 would have a battle royale, but it would appear that’s not the case. Battlefield V tested the waters of battle royale, but failed to make an impression amongst the likes of Fortnite, PUBG, and other dominate games within the genre. It seems that DICE is going to try something entirely different that may somewhat draw comparisons to battle royale, but will not actually be developing a direct competitor to something like Warzone – at least, not at first.

During a Battlefield 2042 reveal event that Screen Rant attended, DICE confirmed the game would not have a single-player campaign like previous games, but there is a general narrative in the background that explains the state of the world and setting for the game. Battlefield 2042 will not have a battle royale, but it’s unclear if it’ll release at a later date, as one developer specifically said there won’t be one “at launch.” That said, DICE LA is making a new mode that will be revealed at EA Play Live. It’s unclear if this is the rumored free-to-play element of Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 Has No Campaign Or Battle Royale Mode

DICE also has another unknown, squad-based mode in Battlefield 2042 called Hazard Zone, but the developer was very clear in saying it’s not a battle royale. Either way, it’s good to see that DICE is heavily focused on the multiplayer for Battlefield 2042. Given Battlefield V was pretty lackluster on all fronts, a honed in approach to the thing that fans love most about the franchise will likely result in a more well-rounded game. Even though the campaigns in the franchise are pretty decent, it’s probably not something that will be missed like it would be for Call of Duty.

Still, it seems like there will be some general narrative to explain the near-future world of Battlefield 2042, so fans can still expect to have some lore to explain what they’re fighting for. It doesn’t seem half-baked either, and it wouldn’t be surprising if there was actually a campaign being built for the game at some point given how detailed and interesting it is, but maybe it got condensed down into background information to focus on multiplayer. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see just how much content there is for Battlefield 2042 at launch and if it can justify its $60 – $70 price point.
