Battlefield 2042 Hovercrafts Are Either Broken Or Genius

Battlefield 2042 has recently released, and it probably comes as no great surprise to see that a Battlefield game is a buggy mess at launch, especially in regards to its hovercraft vehicles. The LCAA Hovercraft is known to climb vertical walls with little difficulty. They are absolutely not supposed to do this, meaning the hovercrafts are completely and utterly broken – but they’re actually a case of accidental genius.

This latest entry in the series is takes Battlefield into the near future, but the name of the LCAA Hovercraft is a bit of a misnomer. It doesn’t actually hover, and operates similar to fan boats frequently used in swamps. In fact, 2042’s hovercrafts aren’t even fictitious, and actual vehicles of this design are commonly used by militaries around the world. Still, it’s definitely not supposed to be able to drive up vertical walls.

The wall-climbing Battlefield 2042 hovercrafts can be seen in action thanks to a collection of clips from user ztsnyder on the game’s subreddit. It would appear that the hovercrafts’ code essentially operates by keeping it stuck to whatever surface is underneath it. If players can maneuver it to get propped up against a wall, giving it a bit more gas will push it up and let the hovercraft be driven all over the side of a building. Any vertical structure appears to work, really, and ztsnyder also drives it up the inside and outside of a radio tower’s trusses, as well as the side of Orbital’s rocket.

Battlefield 2042’s Broken Hovercrafts Are Generally Harmless

It’s safe to assume the developers at DICE did not intend to make drivable elevators, and it will likely be patched out soon, but for now it’s actually a rather harmless bug. It can be argued that there’s an inherent unfair advantage in being able to drive a vehicle up the side of a building onto its roof where enemies might be positioned, but vehicles can get onto roofs anyway. Battlefield 2042 allows vehicles to be spawned in to a specific locations, and as long as there aren’t any obstacles in the way, even tanks can be air lifted onto a roof. This actually may be a much bigger issue if tanks could defy gravity in the same way.

Hovercrafts are certainly capable of taking out enemies, but they’re comparatively rather harmless. The hilarity of it is almost enough to warrant it being left in the game, but the issue is likely already being looked into. Battlefield is already ridiculous enough when it’s operating as intended, and wall climbing hovercrafts is the kind of endearing bug that a community can get behind. At the very least, it would be nice if the developers left the option to have gravity defying hovercrafts in Battlefield Portal maps, where all manner of silly game modes are going to be created. Battlefield 2042 and its hovercrafts not bound to the laws of physics are currently in early access, but will go live for all purchasers on November 19.
