Since Battlefield 2042 lacks a battle royale, a player created the mode themselves using the editing tools available in Battlefield Portal. Publisher Electronic Arts and developer DICE confirmed the absence of battle royale in Battlefield 2042 earlier this summer during the shooter’s reveal event. Questions abound about whether such a gameplay option will make the cut in a post-launch update, given that developers previously said battle royale wouldn’t be available “at launch.”

The series has dabbled in the battle royale space in the past, specifically with Battlefield V’s Firestorm game mode. DICE partnered with sister studio Criterion to develop Firestorm, which pit 64 players against one another on a map surrounded by an enclosing ring of fire. Many assumed the mode would return in some form or fashion for the franchise’s latest entry, but it, apparently, wasn’t on the cards. However, reputable leaker Tom Henderson claims Battlefield 2042 began as a battle royale game, though he’s unsure of when the project pivoted to a more traditional experience. Regardless of what did and did not happen, one player has taken matters into their own hands.

Redditor chbmg spent an exorbitant amount of time with Battlefield Portal’s editing tools to give players what EA and DICE have yet to deliver – a battle royale experience for Battlefield 2042. Titled Warfield 100, the player-created mode boasts a closing circle, randomized loot, pre-game lobby, spectator mode, prison, and the ability to parachute into the game. Warfield 100 is playable across console and PC versions of the title; those interested in giving it a try should find it easily by searching for “Warfield” or “Warfield 100,” chbmg said in a Reddit post. Due to the limitations in the editor, the mode features a fair few quirks; for instance, picking up ground loot may require players to crouch no less than three times. Website MP1st tested the battle royale experience in the following video:

As evidenced in MP1st’s video, which showcases the PS5 version, the user-made mode is riddled with bugs. The site also notes that game crashes are a rather common occurrence once battle royale matches come to a close. Thus, users should jump into this particular Battlefield Portal experience do so at their own risk.

DICE’s latest Battlefield entry comes packed with a sea of changes, chief among them being the absence of a story campaign. The studio additionally abandoned the traditional Class system in favor of Specialists with unique gadgets and abilities, a shift in the formula that hasn’t gone over well with longtime fans.
