Notable leaker and industry insider Tom Henderson has reportedly heard word that Electronic Arts intends to release Battlefield 6 on both current-gen and last-gen consoles this year. That the publisher is targeting a 2021 launch for the franchise’s next mainline entry doesn’t come as a surprise. EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, confirmed as much late last year in an earnings call, wherein he also touted how Battlefield 6 will boast unprecedented levels of scale.

During the call, Wilson additionally said the new consoles are allowing developer DICE to fully realize its “next-gen vision” for the long-running series. As such, many were led to believe Battlefield 6 would launch exclusively on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. If that was indeed once the case, new details suggest things have since changed.

Leaker Tom Henderson claims Battlefield 6 will release this year as a cross-gen title for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. In a video discussing the matter, however, Henderson tells fans not to worry. Since the two versions are in development by two separate teams, the title won’t be held back by the limitations of older hardware. Based on what he’s heard from multiple sources familiar with the situation, Henderson alleged: “A completely different studio or a different part of [DICE] is working on the previous-gen version and it’s something that we simply should not be worried about.” Moreover, he noted that, as a supposed soft-reboot, the next entry could launch with the title of either Battlefield 6 or simply Battlefield.

Previous reports from Henderson claimed the new title will allow up to 128 players to join a match at once, even on consoles. Should Battlefield 6 actually hit last-gen hardware, those versions are unlikely to boast such high player-count possibilities. Battlefield’s standard 64-player cap will probably remain in place on PS4 and Xbox One platforms.

As always, though, fans should take all of the above with a grain of salt. Sure, Henderson, better known for his Call of Duty scoops, has a pretty solid track record. But neither EA nor DICE have corroborated these bits of information as fact. And, as noted above, the shooter still lacks a firm title and a host of other details. When EA and DICE plan to formally reveal the project is anyone’s guess. Once news does start bubbling to the surface, it’ll be interesting to see how the next generation of Battlefield stacks up against Black Ops Cold War.
