Batwoman Ruby Rose Exit Details Reveal OnSet Tensions

New details regarding Ruby Rose’s sudden, shocking exit from The CW’s Batwoman suggests it was a result of on-set tensions. Rose was cast as the Arrowverse’s Kate Kane back in 2018 ahead of her debut in the Elseworlds crossover. At the same time, The CW had already been developing a Batwoman television show, and with Rose officially in the role, Batwoman premiered as part of the network’s 2019-2020 schedule. Like all Arrowverse shows, Batwoman was renewed for a second season, which is slated to premiere in 2021. However, season 2 will have to continue without Rose, as news broke yesterday that she’s leaving the show and The CW is recasting her role.

Rose’s tenure as Batwoman didn’t come without complications. Not long after Rose was cast, she became the subject of fan backlash that prompted her to leave social media. Some attacked her for, in their eyes, not being gay enough to play Kate, who is a lesbian. Others were disappointed that The CW chose not to cast a Jewish actress, as Kate is also Jewish in the comics. Still, Rose hung onto the role, even after an on-set injury forced her to undergo emergency surgery. Some have wondered if that injury helped lead to her exit, but that might not be the case.

In a new report from TVLine, sources close with the Batwoman production say that while yesterday’s news was depicted as though Rose’s departure was entirely her decision, it instead was more of a mutual agreement. “It wasn’t 100-percent her decision,” the source revealed. “It was a breakup. She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned, if they parted ways. It just wasn’t a good fit.”

Some of that tension, another insider said, came from Rose not properly adjusting to a television set. Rose previously appeared in nine episodes of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, but aside from that mainly worked on films. The long hours, plus Batwoman’s Vancouver shooting location, made her distressed and seemed to be significant factors in her desire to leave. Neither Warner Bros. nor The CW offered a comment for this report, and Rose’s representatives couldn’t be reached.

This paints a very different picture than what was initially believed yesterday. It’s unlikely fans will ever completely know what happened, but now they have a better grasp on the situation. The CW promises to recast the role with another LGBTQ actress, but since Rose’s exit is so new, the network hasn’t revealed who is in consideration for the part. It might actually be some time before a new Batwoman is cast, though that hasn’t stopped some (like Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz) from dreaming up new possibilities. Here’s hoping the Arrowverse’s next Batwoman is a better fit.
