Batwoman Showrunner Confirms Kate Kanes Fate After Season 2 Finale

Season 2 of Batwoman wrapped up in an incredibly intense finale, leaving the audience on a devastating cliffhanger. Showrunner Caroline Dries discussed the insane finale, pitfalls of the season, and what fans can look forward to in season 3.

For fans who haven’t watched the final episode of Batwoman season 2 yet, Dries discussed numerous spoilers about the hour and explained that the season finale is the end of the road for the original Kate Kane story. Season 1 of Batwoman originally focused around Kate Kane (Wallis Day), the natural vigilante cousin of Bruce Wayne who replaces his role in Gotham after his absence. Kane had originally lost all of her memory, allowing the iconic Ryan Wilder to step up to the challenge as Batwoman in the second season. Kate regains her memory thanks to Ryan and Alice but decides it is more important to go searching for the ever-elusive Bruce Wayne.

Among the other ground-breaking developments in the show, Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) suits up as Batwing, adding another iconic DC character to the series. Dries explained to Entertainment Weekly, however, that Luke is not trained as a superhero, and wearing a suit does not automatically make you one either. She hints that Luke will have something of personal discovery in season 3 to step up to his new role. That’s not to mention the anxiety-inducing end of the episode, where it is revealed that Batman’s collection of weapons (like Penguin’s umbrella, etc.) have been dropped out into the public for anyone to take.

Dries discussed the tease at more DC characters coming into play for season 3. “DC was so awesome about it because we’re always looking, and as are they, for new ways of showing canon characters, and some of these characters have been done so many times that we’re always looking for that new angle,” she said. “In leading with the weapon first, which is always a big part of the rogues, it allows us way more freedom to kind of do something that we haven’t seen before. There weren’t really any obstacles.”

Batwoman is a pioneering show in many respects, however, some fans were disappointed by the lack of an intimate lesbian love story in the second season. Dries addresses this issue stating that the production of the show had to hold back a majority of intimacy between actresses due to protocols surrounding the pandemic. She also teases a more in-depth love story in the third season but does not clarify between who. There is no telling what the instantly iconic Ryan will face in the third season with so many imminent threats.

No matter what the future holds for Batwoman, it appears Dries and the team behind the show have plenty of exciting stories and characters waiting for the third season. So, if anyone was disappointed to hear that Kate Kane’s storyline has come to an end, there will still be many more DC characters to focus on when the series returns.

Batwoman season 3 is set to premiere on The CW on October 13, 2021.
