Beats Flex Wireless Earphones Last For 12 Hours & Only Cost $50

Beats by Dr. Dre recently announced Flex Bluetooth earphones have gone on sale this week. They’re notable for being the most affordable earphones that Beats has produced to date, costing just $49.99. They’re also exclusively available through Apple, with Beats having been famously acquired by the tech giant in 2014.

Beats was formed in 2006 by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine with the aim of bringing a bass-heavy, club-type sound to headphones. Helped by strong branding and celebrity endorsements of its products, the company grew rapidly before Apple eventually bought it for a cool $3 billion. Traditionally, Beats has focused on the premium end of the market, but the launch of its more affordable Beats EP headphones in 2016 marked a broadening of its offer. The Beats Flex earbuds continue in that vein.

Based on the design of the BeatsX earphones, the Beats Flex earbuds are joined by a neckband, rather than being two separate units like Apple’s AirPods. They are also magnetic, so they can be worn securely around the neck when not in use. This also allows the earphones to recognize when they are not in use and pause playing automatically. They’re available in black and yellow, with gray and blue versions due to arrive next year.

Tech & Audio

Beats explains the Flex earphones use a “layered driver with dual-chamber acoustics to achieve rich, balanced sound with outstanding stereo separation” and that “an advanced digital processor fine-tunes the audio for accurate bass, precise mids, and low distortion across the frequency curve.” Vents are laser cut to ensure accurate sound delivery and pressure relief for the users’ ears. There’s also a built-in microphone with wind reduction for making calls or using a voice assistant. One thing to note is there’s no noise-canceling functionality, which is not unexpected at this price-point for a product equipped with other premium features.

The device is powered by Apple’s W1 chip, which was also used in its first-generation AirPods. This means the Flex integrates easily with Apple’s various products and services. It also allows for Audio Sharing, which lets users share the audio from a device wirelessly and listen to the same music or watch the same movie as a friend. It should be said that the Beats Flex earphones are also compatible with Android, for which there is a Beats app with additional features like quick-pairing, device status, and firmware updates. A full charge gives up to 12 hours of listening time, while 10-minute Fast Fuel charging with the included USB-C cable can provide an additional 1.5 hours of playback when the battery is low. All told, the Beats Flex earphones are an exciting addition to the market.
