There have been several attempts over the years to turns classic Disney theme park rides into movies, including the upcoming Jungle Cruise. But while the reviews for films in this subgenre have been mixed, the biggest success was obviously the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

These action adventure films introduced the world to eccentric pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, iconically played by Johnny Depp. Not all films in the series hit the mark, but the first film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, holds up as an immensely fun blockbuster. As with most films of this size, its journey to the big screen is almost as interesting as the movie itself.

10 Long Development

While the movie was ultimately released in 2003, its development history goes back much longer than that. Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio originally pitched the movie to Disney in the 1990s. In fact, their script eventually got into the hands of Steven Spielberg, who considered directing it at a time.

However, pirate movies had not been seen as a box office draw for quite some time, and after the failure of Cutthroat Island, no one wanted to revisit the genre. It wasn’t until Disney made a push to turn some of their famous theme park rides into movies that this film gained renewed interest.

9 Johnny Depp Almost Wasn’t Jack Sparrow

It’s impossible to imagine anyone but Johnny Depp in the role of Jack Sparrow now. His performance brought so much to the movies and created a beloved character. However, there were many actors who circled the role before Depp signed on.

When Spielberg was considering the project, his top choices for the role were Steve Martin, Bill Murray, and Robin Williams. Christopher Walken was also a contender at some point, and co-writer Stuart Beattie wrote the part with Hugh Jackman in mind.

8 Depp Turned To The Stones For Inspiration

While some actors might have felt the need to make Jack Sparrow a charming hero, Johnny Depp seemed interested in making him as eccentric as possible. So it’s no surprise that he took some rather unusual inspiration for the character and his performance.

It has often been talked about how Depp used Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards as a model for the part. The reason why Depp chose Richards was that he saw pirates as the rock stars of their day and felt Richards’ attitude was perfect, in this respect.

7 Orlando Bloom As Will Turner

While Jack Sparrow is certainly the most entertaining character in the film, the real hero of the story is Will Turner. Will is the skilled swordsman who sets out to defeat the bad guys and rescue the girl.

Casting for the role came down to Orlando Bloom and Heath Ledger, but with the success of The Lord of the Rings, Bloom got the part. However, Bloom wanted to make the character cooler so he could compete with Captain Jack. Unfortunately, director Gore Verbinski kept insisting that Will was a dork.

6 Kiera Knightley

Another important piece to making the perfect cast was Kiera Knightley, as Elizabeth Swann. Remarkably, though she was at the center of this massive summer blockbuster, Knightley was only 17 years old at the time.

Because of her age, Knightley’s mother had to accompany her on the entire shoot. She has said that she was so sure she would be fired from the film, she only packed enough for a few days when she left to start filming.

5 Johnny Depp’s Tattoos

Perhaps part of the reason why Depp was cast in the role was that he sort of has the vibe of a modern-day pirate. In fact, his look was so pirate-like, that some clever costuming and make-up techniques had to be used.

While Captain Jack has several pirate tattoos, Depp’s many personal tattoos had to be covered up with costumes and soot smears. Ironically, Depp made Captain Jack’s tattoo of his own name permanent after filming, in honor of his son Jack.

4 Travel Trouble

Part of what made the film such a beautiful looking film was its many real locations, including several real Caribbean islands that the cast and crew would make their way to via boats.

However, during a night shoot on one of these islands, a boat carrying Kiera Knightley and her mother hit a reef and sank. Luckily, no one on board was injured, but they were stranded for several hours waiting to be rescued. After this incident, night shoots were filmed in a studio.

3 Zoe Saldana’s Negative Experience

Some fans may have forgotten that Zoe Saldana appeared in this film in the small supporting role of Anamaria. This was earlier in Saldana’s career, before she had made much of a name for herself. Given the negative experience she had during filming, it is not surprising she didn’t return for future installments of the franchise.

Though she insists the cast was great to work with, Saldana was frustrated with the hierarchy of such a large production. She claimed she was disrespected by many people because of her smaller role and witnesses a lot of the same towards below-the-line workers. Though the experience nearly made her quit, she would eventually go on to star in franchises like Star Trek, Avatar, and the MCU, so she seems to have had the last laugh.

2 Depp’s Ideas For Jack Sparrow

Apparently, Johnny Depp came to this project very enthusiastic about the kind of character he would be able to create. He had a lot of wild ideas for the look of Jack Sparrow, and as it turned out, a lot of these ideas were too extreme for the studio.

When he first met with Gore Verbinski to discuss the role, Depp explained his idea that Captain Jack would have no nose and be afraid of pepper. Depp also asked that Jack have all gold teeth. The studio refused and said he could have a few gold teeth, which was Depp’s plan all along.

1 Production Was Almost Shut Down

Given how successful this franchise has been for Disney, it’s surprising to learn that the studio initially didn’t have much faith in this first film. In fact, Disney’s president, Michael Eisner, was ready to cut his losses and shut down production after it was already underway.

After 2002’s Country Bears was a critical and financial disaster, Eisner started to have second thoughts about turning theme parks into movies. He was ready to pull the plug on this film, but director Gore Verbinski showed him some concept art that convinced him they were on the right track.
