Below Deck Chef Rachel Says New Chief Stew Is Better Than Kate Chastain

Chef Rachel Hargrove from Below Deck says the show’s new chief stew is even better than Kate Chastain. Rachel was a controversial cast member on season 8 and her return for season 9 only promises more drama and kitchen antics. Chef Rachel most famously had issues with bosun Eddie Lucas during her inaugural season, the two fought viciously on crew nights out, with Eddie alleging that Rachel would get too drunk and belligerent and also called her out for leaving the yacht for a night when things got tough. Although she refuses to apologize for her behvaior, it seems that she and Eddie are at least open to working with one another yet again, as they are both returning to work under Captain Lee for another season, this time with Eddie as first officer and Rachel still in the kitchen.

There are going to be a lot of familiar faces on Below Deck season 9 and some new ones. Captain Lee will be returning for the majority of the season, though Captain Sean Meagher replaces him for some of the earlier episodes. Also onboard? Rayna Lindsay, who will work on both the deck and interior, Fraser Olender as the second male stew in Below Deck history, deckhand Jake Foulger, stewardess Jessica Albert, and another deckhand, Wes O’Dell. Rounding out the crew is Chief Stew Heather Chase, who will be replacing Below Deck mainstay Kate now that she’s left yachting.

It turns out that Heather is seemingly already beloved by everyone on the yacht. Rachel told ET in an interview that she was stoked to have worked with Chastain’s replacement, even going so far as to say that she’s a better stew than Kate ever was. “There’s no throwing jabs. It’s legit. She’s actually passionate and in love with her job,” Rachel said. Although she says she’s not throwing jabs, they sure do sound like fighting words. Which is strange because the two never worked together — Kate left Below Deck after season 7 and Rachel only made her debut in season 8.

Despite never having worked together, the two apparently have a good professional relationship. Kate had previously had nothing but good things to say about the chef, even rooting for her first appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, per Bravo. Kate also admitted to really liking Rachel, telling Bravo that she thought Rachel was great at her job, smart, and had the sense of humor to boot.

After season 7, Kate announced that she was leaving yachting for good, so the only other chief stew Rachel has worked on this show was Francesca Rubi. But it sounds like Heather really made an impression on Rachel anyway — hopefully Kate doesn’t mind the critique.
