Heather Chase is apologizing for using a racial slur during Monday night’s new episode of Below Deck. Viewers met Heather for the first time during season 9 of the popular Bravo show. She quickly became a fan favorite as former chief stewardess Kate Chastain gave Heather her stamp of approval. After fans were officially introduced to her in October for the season premiere, viewers were excited to see Heather take on the role.

Heather didn’t get off on the right foot with second stew Fraser Olender at first, as he didn’t appreciate the way Heather would nitpick at him for missing minor detail while on housekeeping. Heather’s nagging was puzzling for Fraser as he felt she did none of the work. However, he has since warmed up to Heather; now, the two are trying to take third stew Jessica Albert down. After what happened on Monday night, Heather might need her stewards as her close allies.

After the new episode of Below Deck aired on December 13, Heather took to her Instagram account to express how sorry she was for repeating a racial slur while walking next to new deckhand Rayna Lindsey. “I am sorry for the hurt my ignorance caused Rayna in tonight’s episode,” the chief stew began her apology after the incident aired. “While I apologized to Rayna throughout the season, I cannot express enough how remorseful I am.” Heather added that while she apologized to Rayna that night as soon as she was aware of what she said, she understands that Rayna felt uncomfortable by her use of the word. As a chief stew, Heather is aware it is her duty to make everyone on board feel safe and comfortable and realizes her mishap was a huge mistake.

Heather concluded her statement, vowing to “to do better in the future” now that she sees how her words could affect those around her. During Monday night’s episode, Heather, who’s got Kate’s approval, used a racial slur while walking from the bathroom alongside new deckhand, Rayna. The slur was originally said by Rayna while referring to lead deckhand Jake Foulger who was acting silly as the pair walked by him. Heather then repeated the racial slur in a bout of drunkenness, so she says. However, Rayna isn’t buying it and believes Heather said it purposely. Rayna took to her Instagram Stories to call Heather out for being inauthentic in her apology. She believes that they are all grown-ups, and a “mishap” like this is inexcusable.

Overall, Heather seems to feel bad about using the racial slur during the crew night out. However, Rayna seems to feel different about Heather’s apology. She feels Heather the chief stew never really showed any real remorse from using the word and was an attempt to save face. It seems these crewmates will not be so friendly to each other for the rest of the season.
