Some fans think that the best action and drama on Below Deck Med is in the past and we’re here to explain why. The original Below Deck has been a hit for eight seasons, while the Below Deck Med spin-off has had five seasons. It’s not a good sign for the future of the spin-off that fans are starting to grumble so early on. There are a lot of reasons why people feel that the series is past its prime.

In contrast, Below Deck Sailing Yacht is one of the most popular spin-offs. It’s not getting so many bad reviews. On that spin-off, a sailing yacht requires a more responsible crew, and viewers enjoy watching the crew members at work. They also like Captain Glenn Shephard. Despite crashing his boat into the dock due to a system malfunction during season one, many people consider him a better all-around captain than self-described “stud of the sea” Captain Lee Rosbach from the original Below Deck. His confident management style and interactions with his crew make him a hit with fans. They feel he is more in touch with the people on his yacht than Captain Lee is. Meanwhile, Captain Sandy from Below Deck Med has been criticized for micromanaging her crew.

Below Deck Med season two saw more relationship drama than previous seasons, but fans are not willing to suspend their disbelief to the extent that producers may have been hoping for. The Redditor thelostkid5 started a thread about the series, saying, “The way everything is playing out [every] episode makes me really question if almost everything and almost everyone is fake or hired actors, including the guests. Everything seems way [too] convenient.” Many other people agreed, calling the show insulting, cringeworthy, and dumb. See the Reddit post below:

All reality shows are scripted to some extent, but some producers get overly enamored with their idea of where they want the show to go, and end up leaving “reality” far behind. That is what fans suspect has happened on Below Deck Med. Many episodes play out like a sitcom, such as an episode where the crew wakes up hungover and tries to remember what happened the previous night. In particular, Redditors discussed the “coincidence” of a crew member’s chef ex-boyfriend randomly showing up when the yacht’s chef had been fired one day before. Redditor mittnz said, “The acting in that scene was so bad. It was very obvious it was faked.” A Reddit user with the handle SICphilly added, “It was embarrassing to watch. Stop taking us all for fools Bravo, we are not that dumb!”

Audiences want to live vicariously through people who get to sail the high seas, whether as wealthy charter guests or crew members. However, due to bad acting, overly scripted plot lines, and a darkening tone, viewers are no longer getting what they tuned in to see. Season 6 is set to premiere on June 28. If Bravo is paying attention, they will correct the issue before they invest in too many drama writers for future seasons. The viewers have spoken and they are not on board with the direction Below Deck Med is going in.
