Ben Affleck Defends Ridley Scott After Profane Response To Journalist

Ben Affleck defends Ridley Scott after the director gave a profane response to a journalist at a press junket. The two recently collaborated on The Last Duel, which Affleck wrote, produced, and starred in with his friend and Good Will Hunting creative partner Matt Damon. The prolific Scott also released House of Gucci this year, despite being in his 80s and having to work through pandemic filming protocols.

As a result of having premiered two films in 2021, Scott has been doing a lot of interviews, and he has been decidedly frank in his responses. He has been verbally sparring with a deeply offended Gucci family over his crime drama, and when asked about the failure of The Last Duel at the box office despite a strong critical response, the director blamed millennials, describing them as “audiences who were brought up on these f–king cellphones.” Most succinctly, however, Scott cursed out a journalist who gave The Last Duel a backhanded compliment by describing it as more realistic than some of his previous movies, earning a “go f–k yourself, sir” from the filmmaker.

In an interview with THR, Affleck was asked for his thoughts on Scott’s assessment of The Last Duel’s performance, and the star does offer them – but not before giving his director props on his directness. Pointing out the possibility that he might have been “slightly misquoted” on the millennials front, Affleck describes that second string of expletives as the highlight of Scott’s press tour, admitting that he could at least sympathize with the sentiment. The longtime filmmaker, he says, is just at a stage of life where he’s not as image-conscious as the typical Hollywood professional:

I mean, let’s be honest, who hasn’t wanted to say that in a press junket? [Laughs] Ridley is at the stage in his career where, obviously, he’s completely unencumbered by concerns about what people think.

Affleck goes on to reframe the discussion around The Last Duel’s disappointing financial returns as reflective of larger shifts in the industry, with the movie’s target audience becoming the kind of viewer who prefers the comfort of their own home. Indeed, House of Gucci, which managed to gain traction on social media over elements like Lady Gaga’s accent before the movie opened, has performed the best of any adult drama at the box office since the pandemic began. While the risk of contagion is certainly a factor in older audiences staying home, it might be that from now on, any adult drama looking to score big with a theatrical release will have to tailor their marketing to pique the interest of younger viewers.

While some certainly might be offended by Scott’s words, his press tour has been a joy for many, who are hardly used to seeing a filmmaker express their true thoughts in such an unvarnished way. Members of the entertainment industry clearly also appreciate it, with Affleck admitting that his director only said what many have thought while enduring press junkets. The performance of The Last Duel might have dinged his stock somewhat, but everyone is hoping Scott will continue making films as long as he wants to – at least so that he’ll have to keep giving interviews.
