Berserk Is Being Challenged As Best Revenge Manga

A new manga, The Tale of the Teapot Hero’s Revenge, is already doing a surprising job of challenging Berserk’s deserved status as one of the greatest revenge stories of a generation. The epic exploits of Berserk’s seemingly invincible warrior Guts as he slays every man and beast that stands between him and his revenge against his former friend and ally Griffith have made the manga beloved around the world.

Partially what makes Berserk so incredibly effective and why the story resonates with so many readers is the intricate and elongated flashback that explains what drives Guts in his quest to annihilate inhumans known as Apostles. After volumes detailing Guts’ experience as a member of the mercenary troupe the Band of the Hawk, all of his comrades are devoured by demons while his girlfriend Caska loses her mind. This all happens because Griffith, a man whom Guts loved and served alongside for years, sacrifices them all so he can truly achieve his dream as the demon Femto.

The rage that overwhelms and permeates every fiber of Guts’ being can be felt and truly understood by readers because of how much writer Kentaro Miura delves into Guts’ tragic past. And yet, The Tale of the Teapot Hero’s Revenge, written by NonB and Ori, is becoming a likely contender to successfully challenge Berserk even after less than 10 issues. Only seven of these issues have been unofficially translated into English by fans. Part of how this manga accomplishes this amazing feat is through the unique abilities of the protagonist and how she deals with her anger.

The manga tells the story of a world where only one hero can exist at a time on account of its God only granting powers to a new person if the previous hero dies. When a young country girl named Kyrie is chosen, the tyrant king immediately recruits her to continue his war against the demons ravaging his kingdom. But when he learns that her only gift is boiling water, he sends her home and gives his men strict orders to slay her and her entire village so that God can choose the next hero. That night, the king’s men murder Kyrie’s entire family and all of her friends. On its own, this dreadful act is atrocious enough to make the blood of any reader boil. But what helps escalate those feelings are the interactions Kyrie shares with everyone upon her return home earlier that day. Ironically, while Kyrie goes out of her way to help her family in ways she would have never done before, she still has trouble articulating how she truly feels about and appreciates them. Tragically, Kyrie decides to tell them later because she mistakenly believes she now has a lifetime to do so.

Kyrie escapes later after everyone is killed, but soon is forced to face off against her attackers. It’s during this confrontation when she learns that, because the majority of the human body is composed of water, her boiling powers are quite effective. She then begins enacting her revenge by slowly boiling the blood inside her opponent as he screams for mercy. Coincidentally, this scene mirrors an early moment in Berserk when Guts tortures an Apostle who had been terrorizing the local people. Kyrie’s ability to perform heinous acts on the men who did her wrong improves her revenge exponentially.

Even though all of the above takes place in just two chapters, The Tale of the Teapot Hero’s Revenge encroaches on Berserk’s territory as best revenge manga because of the many variables that are in play. The manga creates a unique predicament wherein Kyrie has a chance at salvation but fails. She is first presented with the incredible opportunity of having a better life with her family after losing them once. But before she has enough time to say what she needs to convey, she loses them for a second and final time. She is so driven by her revenge that she is willing to resort to torture, which makes her act of vengeance more real and intense for the reader.
