Best Rotation & Move Set For Reaper Class in FFXIV Endwalker

Reaper is the brand new melee DPS available in Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker. It starts at level 70, which can make understanding the job a little complicated. By grouping skills around the resource they generate, and cost, will quickly reveal an optimal attack rotation.

Reapers are one of the strongest melee DPS, ranking second just under Samurai for personal damage. However, they are second-worst at party-wide utility. This means that a poor-performing Reaper will drag fights out much longer than a Ninja or Dragoon of similar skill.

Reapers make use of strength-based maiming gear, the same armor used by Dragoons for the entire life of A Realm Reborn and onwards. While not an outright requirement, those that have already leveled up Dragoon will reach level 90 quickly by reequipping their old gear. However, actual Reaper attack rotations are more akin to moves utilized by Warriors and Dark Knights.

Reaper Rotation and Resources in Final Fantasy XIV

As Reapers are a more selfish DPS in Final Fantasy XIV, they will be following the lead of supportive jobs to maximize their damage. This includes syncing up powerful attacks at the same time as an allied Ninja’s Trick Attack, Dancer’s Technical Finish, and Red Mage’s Embolden. Even if paired with those that lack party-wide buffs, it is still a good idea to use powerful attacks first so that the cooldown can reset for further procs.

Soul Gauge

Soul Gauge is the resource used to deliver the Reaper’s high damage attacks. It can be built up using the single target rotation of Slice > Waxing Slice > Infernal Slice for single target, or Spinning Scythe > Nightmare Scythe for multiple targets. Each attack will grant 10 Soul Gauge points.

Shadow of Death and Whirl of Death – single and area of effect, respectively – will give 10 points for every enemy killed while under said status effect. That equals a lot of Soul Gauge against large packs, but won’t trigger on bosses with high health. Both skills also increase the Reaper’s damage dealt by 10% to the afflicted targets. Last, players can gain an instant 50 points with use of Soul Slice or Soul Scythe – once again for single enemy or groups, respectively.

For actual use of the Soul Gauge, players have three options, all of which are off-global abilities which means they can easily be weaved between weaponskills. Blood Stalk is the main single-target attack; Grim Swathe for groups; and finally Gluttony is an even more powerful area of effect attack, but suffers from a 60-second cooldown and damage falloff beyond the main target.

Soul Reaver Mode

Use of the previous mentioned Soul Gauge attacks in FFXIV will give stacks of Soul Reaver – one for Blood Stalk or Grim Swathe, or two for Gluttony. These will allow access to Reaper’s only positional weaponskills, though either can be used without lockout unlike a Monk’s stance requirement. Gibbet deals more damage when hitting an enemy from the flank, while Gallows deals more from the rear.

Using either will enhance the other one into their Unveiled form – but replaces Blood Stalk on the hotbar instead of having its own button. Due to this, they become abilities used for weaving, have their positional removed, and each grant another use of Soul Reaver. Alternately, for groups Guillotine can be used, though it has no Unveiled upgrade and does not yield additional Soul Reaver stacks.

Shroud, Lemure, and Void

Starting at level 80 in FFXIV, each use of Gibbet, Gallows, and Guillotine will grant 10 points of Shroud Gauge. Once 50 are collected, players can enter Enshroud. This state lasts for 30 seconds and grants five charges of Lemure Shroud to spend on attacks. At level 86 spent Lemure Shroud will also transform into an equal amount of Void Shroud. These can be used on the following attacks:

Because there are only five Lemure Shroud, it is best to aim to use two of Void Reaping/Cross Reaping > Lemure’s Slice > two more Void Reaping/Cross Reaping > Lemure’s Slice > Communio.

Utility and Movement Options in Final Fantasy XIV

Despite being a very solo functioning job in Final Fantasy XIV, Reaper does still have a handful of skills to help the rest of the party. This includes increasing the damage of others, healing, and simply providing alternate attacks when terrain is too dangerous to cross.

Immortal Sacrifice

At level 72, the Reaper can boost the party’s damage by 3% with use of the off-global ability Arcane Circle. When oneself or any party member uses a weaponskill or spell the Reaper will gain a stack of Immortal Sacrifice. They can hold up to eight of these at a time, though the duration to collect them is a mere five seconds. This can make it a little tough to fill up during a four-man light party. Regardless, each Immortal Sacrifice will increase the potency of Plentiful Harvest, from the base 520 all the way to 800. Plentiful Harvest also gives 50 Shroud Gauge for entering Enshroud much faster, possibly near the start of an encounter.

Damage Prevention

Reapers can also increase mitigation with use of Arcane Crest in Final Fantasy XIV. First, it will yield Crest of Time Borrowed, which will create a barrier that absorbs up to 10% of the affected character’s maximum hitpoints. If the shield is destroyed, that party member will gain Crest of Time Returned which is a 100 potency regen that lasts 15 seconds. Keep in mind that other jobs like Dark Knight and Sage wants their shields to absorb all damage as well, so it is best to use Arcane Crest when no other shield is applied to the party.

Hellsgate Teleportation

Instead of a dash like Samurai or Monk, Reapers can teleport across the battlefield. Hell’s Ingress will move forward 15 yalms, while Hell’s Egress moves back 15 yalms. At level 74, either will leave behind a Hellsgate, which can be instantly teleported to with Regress. As a bonus, after movement causes the spell Harpe to be instant casted, making a nice follow-up attack.

But, Harpe is only a single target attack. For groups at range, Reapers will need to first cast Soulsow and then follow up with Harvest Moon. However, Soulsow has no cast time when out of combat, allowing Harvest Moon to be banked before a fight starts. Soulsow should also be used during a mid-fight phase transition while enemies are invincible.
