Beths Original Walking Dead Death Wouldve Been Much Worse

The death that was originally planned for Beth (Emily Kenney) in The Walking Dead season 3 was much worse than the tragic fate she received in season 5. Beth was Maggie’s younger sister and a member of Rick’s group between seasons 2 and 5. She joined up during their stay at the Greene family farm and stuck around through the prison story, the battle with the Governor, and the encounter with Terminus, but didn’t quite make it to the introduction of Alexandria.

Beth met her end in The Walking Dead season 5 when she found herself at a hospital in Atlanta, which is where she met Noah. With help from Beth, Noah was able to escape the hospital and the people who occupied it. He made it to Rick’s camp and was able to get a group to go back for Beth. Their visit to the hospital was taken as a hostile action, prompting a confrontation between Rick’s people and the police at the hospital, led by a paranoid Dawn. They tried to trade Noah for Beth, but when she attacked Dawn out of anger, Dawn reflexively shot her. In retaliation, Daryl killed Dawn, but no one was able to save Beth. Maggie was shaken when she watched Daryl leave the hospital with Beth’s body in his arms.

Originally, the writers had a different idea of how Beth’s story should end. In season 3, The Walking Dead was going to reveal that one of the two convicts who joined Rick’s group, Axel, was a serial killer. In the episodes in which Axel appeared, he was shown to be kind and good, but Temple says that was because they wanted to hide the truth about him so that it would be more shocking. There was a scene planned where Axel was to take Beth out into the woods and “slaughter” her. Temple was later told by the writers that these ideas had been abandoned because the show was already “pretty dark” and that they should “lighten things up a bit”.

A death like this for Beth would have been far worse than what actually happened to her in The Walking Dead season 5, and that’s saying a lot considering that she had one of the show’s most controversial deaths. Beth’s death at the hands of Dawn was regarded as especially dark and unnecessary, and a similar description could be applied to the original plan.

Having a teenage girl brutally murdered by a serial killer would have been a terrible end – for both characters. This would have ruined Axel’s character, as he broke the stereotype of criminal characters with his humorous and light-hearted personality. He was a likable yet short-lived addition to the cast. It also would have prevented the show from ever fully developing Beth’s character. In Walking Dead season 3, Beth was only billed as a recurring character and had yet to get any meaningful arcs. Most of Beth’s stories and interactions with characters like Daryl came a little later in the series. Killing her then in season 3 would have reduced her to canon fodder for a serial killer story that would have felt like it came out of out of left field.
