Better Call Saul The Main Characters Ranked by Likability

While a spin-off show from Breaking Bad initially sounded like a bad idea, Better Call Saul has not only lived up to its predecessors, but some say it has surpassed it. The series follows the early days of Jimmy McGill as he transforms into the amoral lawyer Saul Goodman.

The show is a fascinating dive into this side player from Breaking Bad but is elevated thanks to its large cast of great characters. Along with some familiar faces, the show has introduced excellent new people in this universe who all operate somewhere between good and evil. With so much gray area, it’s hard to discern who is the most likable character on Better Call Saul.

10 Hector Salamanca

Fans of Breaking Bad instantly recognized Hector Salamanca when he appeared in this series. And they instantly knew he was bad news. Hector is the terrifying enforcer of the cartel who is particularly unhappy about doing business with Gus Fring.

Hector is totally unsubtle in his criminal activity and seems to consider himself untouchable. He shows no hesitation or remorse for killing and his tactics for muscling Fring actually made audiences like Fring more, despite his own dark side. Hector is an effectively scary villain but certainly not someone fans want to spend time with.

9 Chuck McGill

The first few seasons of the show go into a lot of detail showing how Jimmy lost his way in his career as an honest lawyer. A big part of the issue was due to his own brother, Chuck McGill. Chuck is a successful lawyer in his own right but instead of being proud of Jimmy following in his footsteps, he tried to hold him back.

Chuck decided long ago that Jimmy was just a dishonest person and refused to believe he could change. The elder McGill brother is an arrogant man who thinks he always knows best, and even when Jimmy helped him with his mental health issues, Chuck always saw Jimmy as the burden.

8 Howard Hamlin

In many ways, Howard is like the brother Jimmy wished he had which might explain some of his animosity towards the man. He is one of the partners in Chuck’s law firm and a close friend to the McGill brothers.

Howard looks at Jimmy as someone he has to protect but he often goes about it the wrong way. Like Chuck, even Howard’s well-intentioned acts can seem condescending. He also sees himself as superior which is why it is fun to see Jimmy get the better of him — even when Howard doesn’t deserve it.

7 Gus Fring

Gus Fring is considered by many to be the best villain in Breaking Bad (perhaps aside from Walter White himself). So when fans saw him reappear in this show, they were understandably excited to dive deeper into this complex character.

Since he is so layered, Gus falls somewhere between a terrible villain you hate and a charismatic antihero who we want to see succeed. His mission of revenge against the ruthless cartel is thrilling, but given some of the things he has done, isn’t Gus as evil as they are?

6 Lalo Salamanca

The Breaking Bad universe created a number of phenomenal villains, but the most recent bad guy might be its best ever. Lalo Salamanca was a late addition to the series but quickly became one of the best and more entertaining characters on the show.

Lalo is the nephew of Hector Salamanca and a key member of the cartel. He is a wildly charismatic and funny guy, which makes him all the more terrifying when he kills in cold blood. Despite being a terrible person, Lalo is so much fun that it’s hard not to cheer for him.

5 Stacey Ehrmantraut

Better Call Saul also allows us to take a deeper dive into the character of Mike Ehrmantraut, and as a result, we are introduced to his daughter-in-law, Stacey. Following the death of Mike’s son, Mike remains close to Stacey and her daughter and helps out however he can.

Stacey is an incredibly strong and patient person who deals with this loss heroically. Though Mike helps her in many ways, she is also trying to help him deal with his grief in a healthier way. There is really nothing not to like about Stacey, but she is just not as central a character as some of the others.

4 Nacho Varga

Like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul features many scary characters who are part of the drug world. Nacho Varga is one of the most intriguing and complicated of those characters and someone who is surprisingly easy to root for.

Like Jesse Pinkman, Nacho is someone who has been in this life for a long time but begins to look for a way out. He genuinely loves his father and hates seeing him dragged into this world. As Nacho struggles to survive, he becomes more and more sympathetic.

3 Jimmy McGill

As soon as he was introduced in Breaking Bad, Saul Goodman was an outrageously entertaining character. But the fact that he would sell out just about anyone to make a bit of money made it hard to really like him. This show expands the character in some astonishing ways, so the viewer becomes invested in Jimmy McGill and his journey.

Jimmy’s backstory makes him a much more sympathetic man and the way he builds himself up into a real success is actually admirable. He is a real underdog in many ways so it’s easier to overlook his sleazier antics.

2 Mike Ehrmantraut

Mike was a fan favorite on Breaking Bad and he is even more likable on this show as his character in further explored. He is without a doubt the biggest badass on the show and, despite his age, he is not someone you want to mess with.

His tragic backstory helps to justify some of his uglier moments and his relationship with his family makes him feel much more heroic than he was in Breaking Bad. Mike is someone fans want to see win.

1 Kim Wexler

As the series went on, it became clear that Better Call Saul was as much about the fight for Kim Wexler’s soul as it was about the origin of Saul Goodman. Kim is Jimmy’s partner and eventual wife who has stuck by his side through a lot.

Kim is a very caring person and even as a lawyer, she is much more interested in helping vulnerable people than she is making money. She is even willing to bend the law to help those in need. As Jimmy’s bad influence rubs off on Kim, the show poses the question of whether or not she will break bad.
