Better Call Saul Why Kim Always Wears a Ponytail

As season 5 of Better Call Saul continues, the relationship between Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and the ponytail-sporting Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) remains very much at the heart and soul of the show. At this point, Jimmy has completed his evolution into Saul Goodman, both in name and in appearance. Saul’s tacky, blinding suits and Bluetooth earpiece have arrived in full force. However, Kim appears much the same in this newest season of Better Call Saul. Her ever-present, signature curled blonde ponytail remains intact.

Fans of Better Call Saul know that Kim and Jimmy began as friends and colleagues, but that grew into an unlikely romantic coupling. They now live together, eat a lot of takeout food together, and care for a pet goldfish together. They also assist each other in their professional lives. Jimmy likes to play fast and loose with the law. He’s a con man with a law degree, and he’s not above aggressively marketing his skills to get clients (most of whom come from the underbelly of society). He also lies to get his way and even suggests this technique to Kim in the current season’s second episode, “50% Off.” She shoots down and chastises Jimmy, who is now professionally going by Saul, but then ends up twisting the truth with her pro bono client anyway.

Seeing that Jimmy and Kim are the yin and yang of Better Call Saul, it could be easy to see Kim’s delicately curled ponytail as a nod to innocence and femininity. While that is somewhat true, it is also the hairstyle of a warrior. In season 5, episode 3, “Dedicado a Max,” Kim’s client, a holdout who refuses to move off land owned by Mesa Verde, points out her warrior status. Acker, the angry homeowner, tells her off, calling her “the big gun with a ponytail.”

Better Call Saul hairstylist Tricia Almeida confirmed the power of the ponytail in an interview with Vulture. She said,”Whenever women with long hair need to get s*** done, you just get your hair out of your face.” So the hairstyle means Kim is in work mode, and Kim is almost always in work mode. The curl at its end simply adds even more control to the hair. In the same article, Rhea Seehorn explained that a long, straight ponytail was still a liability, and that Almeida added the curl to keep it from getting in the way.

Viewers of Better Call Saul can also use the ponytail to gauge Kim’s situation in life. The higher it is on her head, the more stable she is. However, the ponytail drifts down to a lower position when she’s on the losing end of things. Such was the case after Kim’s devastating car wreck in season 3.

The strong, hardworking Kim and her ponytail, of course, were not characters in Breaking Bad, the show for which Better Call Saul serves as a prequel. Because of this, fans are naturally anxious about where Kim’s story is going. Will she be killed off? Will she and Jimmy just have a colossal, irreparable falling out? With season 6 of Better Call Saul set to be its last, only time will tell where that swinging ponytail will take her.
