A good romantic comedy story will always feature a relatable lead character and a significant other that is liked by this main character. There may also be family members, enemies, coworkers and friends… such as the best friends that are listed out and ranked below.

From characters who grew up together to those who had relationships that blossomed before fans’ eyes, these BFFs stood side by side, through thick and thin, no matter what, which was truly beautiful and inspiring. 10 Josie Geller & Anita

In Never Been Kissed, Drew Barrymore’s character, Josie Geller, had to go back to high school for an uncover reporting gig. She was not exactly popular as a teen, so this was nerve-wracking for a few reasons.

Thankfully, she had a friend at work, though: Anita, who was played by Molly Shannon. Anita gave her advice, cheered her up and was so proud after that vote as prom queen and that big reveal.

9 Annie Walker & Lillian Donovan

Kristen Wiig starred as Annie Walker and Maya Rudolph starred as Lillian Donovan in Bridesmaids. Things were not going so well for Annie, but at least she had her bestie, Lillian, who became engaged within this story.

However, weddings can be stressful: Lillian handed planning and preparation over to Helen, the wife of the groom’s boss and the person who was competing against Annie for Lillian’s friendship. In the end, these two pals were able to make up and even gave the world a memorable rendition of Hold On. That’s true friendship!

8 Kate Spencer, Heather Montgomery, Beth McIntyre & Carrie Schaeffer

Nothing brings a group of girls together like a mission to take down a guy… and that was the story in John Tucker Must Die! Kate Spencer (Brittany Snow) teamed up with Carrie Schaeffer (Arielle Kebbel), on overachiever; Heather Montgomery (Ashanti), a head cheerleader; and Beth McIntyre (Sophia Bush), a liberal vegan activist, since John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) was dating and playing them all.

7 Kirby Keager, Billy Hicks, Kevin Dolenz, Julianna Van Patten, Alec Newbury, Leslie Hunter & Wendy Beamish

Next up would be the main group from St. Elmo’s Fire; this Brat Pack film, from 1985, followed college grads who were adjusting to new, real lives. Through it all, they had each other’s backs.

There was Kirby, a law student and waiter played by Emilio Estevez; Billy, a sax player portrayed by Rob Lowe; Kevin, a journalist played by Andrew McCarthy; Jules, a party girl portrayed by Demi Moore; Alec, an aspiring politician played by Judd Nelson; Leslie, an architect portrayed by Ally Sheedy; and Wendy, a social worker played by Mare Winningham.

6 Cher Horowitz, Dionne Davenport & Tai Frasier

Everyone knows Cher Horowitz, Alicia Silverstone’s character from Clueless; she was pretty and popular, living life as an it girl in Beverly Hills. And she had two best friends: One was Dionne Davenport, Stacey Dash’s character, who was always by Cher’s side and always looked just as fabulous. The other was Tai Frasier, Brittany Murphy’s character and the one who got that iconic makeover… because true BFFs don’t let their BFFs walk around with bad hairstyles and unflattering outfits!

5 Jenny Young, Blair Helms & Erin Kennedy

Last year, Someone Great was released on Netflix, starring Gina Rodriguez as Jenny Young, Brittany Snow as Blair Helms and DeWanda Wise as Erin Kennedy. Breakups, bad days and beautiful moments were all shared by these three young women.

Jenny, in particular, was going through a rough breakup, and watching these characters navigate that and more was motivating and relatable.

4 Mia Thermopolis & Lilly Moscovitz

In 2001, The Princess Diaries came out, and it also featured two classic buds. Anne Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis, learned she was the heir to the throne of a kingdom. Her bestie, Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo), was just as shocked to learn about this news.

There were some ups and downs, since Mia had new responsibilities and roles after that. But these two were in it for the long haul, and Lilly even showed up in the sequel!

3 Cady Heron, Janis Ian & Damian Leigh

One of the most popular rom-coms of all time is Mean Girls, and it showed off friendship in a great way with Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian Leigh (Daniel Franzese).

Sure, she became a Plastic, which made her new pals not like her anymore, but she learned her lesson. She came around, and in the end, they were all friends again, making high school a little bit more bearable.

2 Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, Carmen Lowell & Bridget Vreeland

Another group of gal pals would be the stars of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Amber Tamblyn played Tibby Rollins, America Ferrera played Carmen Lowell, Blake Lively played Bridget Vreeland, and Alexis Bledel played Lena Kaligaris.

They found a magical pair of pants, which brought them even closer together. Years passed, relationships came and went, moves took place, but no matter what, they checked in on one another, cared for one another, and loved one another.
