Big Brother has been on the air for 20 years, and in that time, many mistakes have been made. Big Brother is a game, and like all games, a flawless performance — or, as close to flawless as possible — is needed in order to win.

Luckily for everyone’s viewing pleasure, Big Brother is filled with flawed gameplay. Mistakes are constantly made, and while these mistakes may often prove frustrating for fans, they also make for hilarious viewing. Some of these mistakes were made with good intentions, and others were just silly and unnecessary.

When Danielle Used The Veto On Dan

Shane Meaney and Danielle Murphree shared a good connection on Big Brother 14. Things were looking very good for the duo, as they had made it into the final four with Dan and Ian. Unfortunately, Danielle went on to make a major blunder.

After winning Veto, Danielle decided to use it on Dan, who was sitting on the block with Ian. Dan, in turn, used his newfound safety to vote off Shane. It flabbergasted both Ian and Danielle, and it made for one of the biggest blindsides in the show’s history and also one of the most hilarious.

When Marcellas Didn’t Use The Veto

There are the best Veto plays in Big Brother history. And then there is this. Marcellas Reynolds of Big Brother 3 made one of the most infamous blunders in the show’s history when he refused to use the Golden Power of Veto on himself.

His friend and ally Amy Crews was also on the block, and he felt bad taking himself off. Unfortunately (and hilariously), the move came back to bite Marcellas, as head of household Jason Guy evicted him in a tiebreaker. A player on the block in possession of the Veto MUST use it on themselves. That’s just Big Brother 101.

When Paul Took Nicole

It’s always embarrassing, if not entertaining, watching a clear frontrunner take the wrong person to the finals. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened with Big Brother 18’s Paul Abrahamian. Paul seemingly had the game in the bag, had he just taken James Huling to the final two.

However, he decided to evict James and bring Nicole Franzel instead, and it cost him half a million dollars. Nicole ended up winning 5-4, and it is now considered one of the most consequential mistakes in the series’ history.

When Ryan Nominated His Only Allies

Big Brother Canada also has its fair share of hilarious fumbles. Ryan Ballantine of Big Brother Canada 6 saw himself as a major strategic threat, and this involved … putting his only two allies on the block.

Ryan was targeting Olivia Riemer in a backdoor, so he put his only two allies, Andrew Miller and Hamza Hatoum, on the block as pawns. It obviously didn’t go well, and neither of the three won the Veto. Andrew was subsequently booted in a unanimous 10-0 vote.

When Cody Took Derrick

Cody Calafiore could be considered an All-Star, but his final move in Big Brother 16 was one of the all-time worst blunders. Cody had the game in the bag. All he needed to do was evict Derrick Levasseur and bring Victoria Rafaeli to the final two.

The game was his, and jury members even admitted as much in post-game interviews. However, he decided to remain loyal to his good pal Derrick, and it was a $500,000 mistake. Derrick ended up handily defeating Cody in a 7-2 vote, and viewers couldn’t help but shake their heads in amusement.

When Lawon Asked To Be Evicted

Lawon Exum may be the worst player in Big Brother history. Competing on Big Brother 13, Lawon actually asked to be evicted, as he naively believed that he would return to the game in a twist. There was absolutely no basis for this belief, as Julie Chen never once mentioned a potential twist.

His wish was hilariously granted. Lawon was put up by Kalia Booker and sent home in a unanimous 6-0 vote. There was no twist and Lawon went on to lose the battle back, placing him in 10th.

When Howie Nominated His Own Alliance Members

Howie Gordon broke a monumental Big Brother rule, and that is to never nominate allies. During Big Brother 6, Howie was successfully manipulated by Maggie Ausburn and nominated his own two allies, James Rhine and Sarah Hrejsa, for eviction.

James ended up winning the POV and taking himself off the block. Things weren’t as fortunate for poor Sarah, and she was sent home under her own ally’s HOH reign in a near-unanimous 6-1 vote.

When Nick & Phil Paquette Tried Nominating Themselves

Big Brother Canada 4 is highly controversial, as it contains undeserving winners in brothers Nick and Phil Paquette. They are known for a hilarious and infamous blunder on Day 63 when they tried nominating themselves as HoH.

It occurred during a chaotic double eviction after Cassandra used the Veto on Tim. Unsure of what to do, they decided to nominate themselves for eviction. Host Arisa Cox essentially told them that they couldn’t do that, and they went on to nominate Joel Lefevre.

When Dustin Asked To Be A Pawn

Dustin Erikstrup of Big Brother 8 went against all semblance of logic and directly asked to be a pawn. Season 8 is an exciting, must-watch Big Brother season, but it contains some horrible gameplay. Dustin wished to be a pawn against target Dick Donato, believing that his Late Night Crew alliance would have the necessary votes to send Dick packing.

But in a huge (and controversial) blindside, Dustin was sent to the jury instead of Dick in a 4-2 vote. They always say that pawns go home, and in this case, that turned out to be the case.

When Bayleigh Told Rachel About The App

Bayleigh Dayton of Big Brother 20 had one of the most disastrous HoH reigns in the series’ history. She had nominated both Brett Robinson and Rachel Swindler, but she made the costly mistake of telling Rachel about her Power App.

Rachel in turn told her Level Six alliance, and they proceeded to blindside Bayleigh by betraying Rachel and sending her packing in a 5-4 vote. It was a smart move, as it allowed Bayleigh’s real target to remain in the game.
