The first extended trailer for Big Mouth season 5 has been released. Following a selection of early pubescent middle-schoolers, the adult animation Netflix show casts a comedic, often controversial, eye across the hormone-riddled confusion of those early formative years. Big Mouth season 5 is slated to release on November 5 this year.

Previous seasons of Big Mouth have seen the show address such topics as first sexual experiences, menstruation, and mental health, with the season 4 addressing the subjects of anxiety and coming out. Season 5 is sure to cover similar topics and will feature returning characters Nick (Nick Kroll), Andrew (John Mulaney), Jessi (Jessi Klein) and Jay (Jason Mantzoukis), as well as the permanent return of Ayo Edibiri as Missy. Edibiri replaced Jenny Slate late in Big Mouth season 4 after controversy following the White actor’s portrayal of the Black character.

Netflix has shared a two-and-a-half-minute trailer for Big Mouth season 5 to excite fans ahead of the shows imminent release. Opening with a typically raunchy encounter between the hormone monsters Maury (Nick Kroll) and Connie (Maya Rudolph), the trailer goes on to tease the new shocking stories and cringe-worthy characters that can be expected. Love spreads across Bridgeton Middle School as the children become bitten by Love Bugs that seem to override any of their sultrier desires usually stirred by their regular hormone monsters, as Nick’s crush on Jessi continues to grow while Jessi herself is enamored with Ali. Meanwhile, Matthew has a conflicted attraction towards Jay, who continues his tumultuous relationship with Lola. LGBTQ+ storylines look set to be a large feature of the upcoming season as different characters begin to experiment with and discover their sexualities. However, with the Love Bugs come Hate Worms as the adolescents get strapped in for the emotional rollercoasters that also come with puberty. Sparks of love and anger will fly but it can only be revealed which will start to flame once the full episodes are available.

The Big Mouth season 5 trailer concludes with the teasing of a Christmas special as a puppet-like Maury, in the style of so many classic Christmas cartoons, directly addresses the camera and promises the audience a glimpse of Santa’s private baubles. With the mixture of childhood innocence and religious beliefs that comes with the festive period, a Big Mouth Christmas Special would be certain to be one of the show’s most outrageous episodes yet.

Of course, Big Mouth draws various criticisms over its explicit portrayal of adolescent sexuality and puberty but it can also be admired for its inclusive representation and exploration of various LGBTQ+ topics and directly tackling subjects that are usually considered taboo. Its explicit approach may be too much for some but it could also be important and relatable to many people out there who are still figuring out who they really are, as well as just being straightforwardly hilarious for those who are on the same wavelength as its humor. Meanwhile, Netflix have also announced the spin-off show, Human Resources, specifically surrounding the hormone monsters and other emotional beasts that exist in the universe of the show, so presumably this could include new monsters like the Love Bugs and Hate Worms.
