Bill & Ted 3 Adds Kristen Schaal Holland Taylor

The cast of Bill & Ted Face the Music continues to grow, with both Kristen Schaal and Holland Taylor signing on. The titular pair, played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves – and known collectively as the rock band Wyld Stallyns – first debuted in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. On the verge of failing high school, they were aided by a man from the future named Rufus (George Carlin) who reveals that they were destined to write the music upon which a peaceful, utopian world would one day be formed. Gifted with a time-traveling phone booth, Bill and Ted journey through history in order to guarantee they pass their final test and ensure they weren’t separated. The film was a surprise hit, prompting the 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.

A third installment has been a cult film fan’s pipe dream for many of the years that followed. Despite occasional signs of hope from the film’s stars, the prospect of continued Bill & Ted adventures – outside of the animated series – seemed destined to remain in limbo. An announcement in March, however, revealed an official release date for the film. And, if that wasn’t proof enough for fans of the films, the new installment officially began filming at the end of June. Original Bill & Ted screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon returned to write the script, and Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) has been confirmed to direct.

According to EW, Schaal and Taylor have officially joined the cast and will play key roles in the sequel. Taylor (the upcoming To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You) will play The Great Leader, who is described as “the most powerful person in the universe – the center of which is San Dimas, Calif., 700 years in the future.” Schaal (Toy Story 4), meanwhile, will play Kelly, a messenger from the future, likely serving a similar function to Carlin’s Rufus in the original installments.

The two actresses won’t be the only new faces on the cast. The film recently cast Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving as the duo’s grown-up daughters, Billie and Thea, respectively, and Barry’s Anthony Carrigan was also recently confirmed to be playing the main antagonist. Jillian Bell, meanwhile, will play the families’ therapist; and alongside Reeves and Winter, the third outing will also see the return of William Sadler as Death, as well as Hal Landon Jr. and Amy Stoch as Ted’s father (police chief Chet Logan) and both character’s one-time stepmom, Missy, respectively.

Little is known regarding the adventure the iconic pair (and their new families) will find themselves on. With the world starting to unravel, however, and on the verge of collapse, it will be up to them to finally live up to their long prophesied destiny. It also remains to be seen how large of a role both Schaal and Taylor play in the film. Whatever the case, Schaal has proven her comedic abilities time and time again, in both animation and live-action outings, including Bob’s Burgers. Equally, Taylor has numerous acclaimed performances to her name and is no slouch in the comedic department, appearing in such classics as The Truman Show and Legally Blonde. As such, the already stellar cast just grew even more and will surely have fans even more excited to see Bill & Ted Face the Music finally hit theaters.
