Bill & Ted Are NOT Stoners Keanu Reeves Sets The Record Straight

Keanu Reeves, star of the Bill & Ted film franchise including upcoming new installment Bill & Ted Face the Music, explains the movie characters Bill and Ted are not stoners – contrary to popular belief. In the upcoming film, Alex Winter and Reeves will return to bring back Bill and Ted, who first appeared in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Since the last installment of the franchise in 1991, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, fans have been anxiously awaiting the beloved series’ return for the past 30 years.

In 2010, Reeves confirmed that writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon had returned to write a script for the third film where the characters return as middle-aged dads. After that, Bill & Ted 3 had trouble moving forward with studios hesitant to sign on to the project as a continuation of the original cast and were looking to reboot the Bill & Ted universe entirely. Additionally, because Matheson and Solomon were not under pressure to hit a deadline, they wanted to work patiently on the script to achieve their intended story. Finally, in 2018, after taking their time with the script, Matheson, Solomon, Winter, and Reeves got the green-light.

In an interview with AP Entertainment, Reeves said, “I’d like to get one thing straight. Bill and Ted are not stoners. Okay, let’s get that clear.” Reeves further expressed his honest opinions about the beloved role and elevated the character above the label of “Stoner.” Instead of this popular belief, Reeves suggests that the dynamic duo, “have a nice outlook on life, they like people, there’s friendship.”

Certainly, there are reasons fans believed Bill and Ted to be stoners, including the characters’ specific attitudes and languages, which were often associated with stoners at the time and since. Though it’s never been established in the movies – Bill and Ted haven’t been shown smoking nor interacting with any kind of weed paraphernalia – but the way the characters are played resembles many other stoner characters. Because of these similarities and the stereotypes of stoners entrenched in pop culture, it’s not difficult to see how many made the assumption Bill and Ted are stoners themselves.

Although Reeves has attempted to squash the duo’s stoner reputation, it’s unclear if the fans will accept it. After all, considering the first Bill & Ted movie came out more than 30 years ago, the misconception of Reeves and Winter’s characters being stoners is long held. Unless there’s something in Bill & Ted Face the Music when it releases to establish the characters aren’t stoners, fans may continue to hold onto their own ideas about Bill and Ted. Still, as an authority on Bill & Ted, Reeves likely knows what he’s talking about. Whatever the case, fans will get a chance to reunite with their favorite non-stoners this Friday when Bill & Ted Face the Music arrives.
