It’s time to party on dudes because Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted “Theodore” Logan are back in another most excellent journey, Bill & Ted Face The Music. After 29 years, Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are returning as the titular metal-loving slackers, who have found themselves succumbing to the torpor of middle-age and suburban life. Without having created the perfect song that would unite the universe, they decide to steal the song form their future selves, but in order for such a bogus idea to work they need to enlist help from across space and time.

The third installment in the Bill & Ted franchise received a sneak peak trailer that wasn’t big on reveals, leaving fans to feel that there was more than trouble afoot at the Circle K. Below fans will find information about the casting, production, and plot of Bill & Ted Face The Music more wild than Genghis Khan at Oshman’s Sporting Goods. It debuts August 14th, 2020.

10 IT’S BEEN IN DEVELOPMENT FOR DECADES

The idea for another Bill & Ted adventure had been kicking around ever since the early ’00s, but Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter would only sign on to a third film if the script made sense.

A script by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon surfaced in 2010, and it would go through several adjustments (as well as distribution issues) before the two leads would commit to a film in 2018.

9 THE ORIGINAL STORY WAS QUITE DIFFERENT

Bill and Ted wouldn’t stand for executive meddling and neither apparently did Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. The two leads weren’t keen on the ideas that studio heads had for a sequel to the previous two films.

Originally Orion Pictures wanted the third film to be a remake/reboot of sorts, wherein Bill and Ted assumed a role similar to Rufus and locate two young teenagers themselves to help pass their History class and start a metal band. Most heinous! Bill and Ted deserve the closure to their own story before passing the torch.

8 BILL AND TED ARE GOING TO ENCOUNTER BILL AND TED

Like Terminator or Back to the Future, the Bill & Ted franchise focuses on time-travel. The plot of every film features Bill and Ted traveling forward and backward in time to affect the past, future, and present.

Bill & Ted Face The Music will feature a middle-aged Bill and Ted going back to the past and observing their younger selves in the events of the first film, especially outside the Circle K, where trouble will most certainly be afoot.

7 THE PRINCESSES WILL RETURN

In Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Bill and Ted traveled through medieval Europe in order to help ace their History exam. They fell in love with Princesses Joanna and Elizabeth, but it was unclear what happened to them after the second film.

The princesses will return for Bill & Ted Face The Music, portrayed by Jayma Mays and Erin Hayes, respectively. They’ll be married to Bill and Ted and settling into suburban Middle Age.

6 BILL AND TED WILL BE HELPED BY THEIR DAUGHTERS

Writing a song to unite the universe and save the world will be no easy task, so along with the help of famous historical figures, rock stars, and each other, Bill and Ted are going to enlist their daughters.

Samara Weaving, who will play Bill’s daughter in the film, has stated that though the “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, the daughters of the dynamic duo will still be smarter than their dads and able to find ways to assist them they wouldn’t have thought of.

5 DEATH IS BACK

Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey saw Bill and Ted travel to hell and back, bringing the “devil’s music” (aka rock and roll) to the masses. Along the way, they were helped by none other than Death himself, whose acerbic wit and deadpan delivery contributed to some of the best scenes in the film.

Rufus’s future world predicted that Bill and Ted and the Wyld Stallyn’s would be the one’s to unite humanity, but since that didn’t happen, they’ll need help from all their old friends, including Death. William Sander will be reprising his role as the perpetually irked Grim Reaper.

4 IT PARTNERED WITH THE WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT

Jake Tapper, Chief Washington Correspondent for CNN, was instrumental in helping veterans find roles as extras in the film, which was mostly shot on location in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Production worked with the Wounded Warrior Project so that dozens of veterans could be cast. The Wounded Warrior Project is committed to improving the lives of veterans through many avenues, including job placement in the film industry.

3 IT WILL FEATURE NEW MUSIC

No Bill and Ted adventure is complete without a killer soundtrack, and since this journey features Bill and Ted in a race against time to complete a song to save the universe, fans can expect to rock out to some truly epic jams.

Metal bands like Mastadon will be writing and recording all new music specifically for the release of the film, and dozens of famous musical artists will be featured in the film itself as Bill and Ted seek out their musical heroes to help them write a universe-saving power ballad.

2 IT’S A DEDICATION TO GEORGE CARLIN

George Carlin, who so memorably played Rufus in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, passed away in 2008. Prior to his death, he had been in talks to reprise his role if a suitable script could be written.

Unfortunately, Bill & Ted Face The Music will have to proceed without him but leads Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter had stated that it will serve as a dedication to their friend. There have been rumors that Rufus may appear using archive footage from the previous films.

1 IT’S NOT A CASH GRAB FOR NOSTALGIA

Bill & Ted Face The Music was written “on spec”, which means it was worked on tirelessly until it was considered just right creatively. According to Ed Solomon, “This is not, ‘Hey, let’s all cash-in on the Bill & Ted thing for money’ – this is the opposite.”

It was important for the film to feature the energy and fun that made Bill and Ted great in the first place, but from the perspective of the goofy pair as middle-aged dudes. What fans will get it a fun, humorous, and ultimately heartfelt ode to everyone’s favorite headbanging slackers.
