BioShock 4 How Booker DeWitt Can Return

Back in December of 2019, 2K announced that new game studio Cloud Chamber was formed to be the creators of BioShock 4. While very few details are known about BioShock 4 at this time, a few things can be inferred from both 2K’s announcement and subsequent job listings from Cloud Chamber. 2K assures fans that the game will retain the narrative-driven, first person gameplay from the original three games, but it appears Cloud Chamber may be expanding the scope of the game world. According to a recent job listing, it is possible that BioShock 4 may be set in an open world. These details don’t reveal anything about the story itself, and fans of the franchise may be wondering if Booker DeWitt will return in BioShock 4.

Booker DeWitt was the protagonist and playable character in the critically-acclaimed third installment in the series, BioShock Infinite. DeWitt is a former Pinkerton agent, disgraced and discharged for his involvement in the Wounded Knee Massacre, who is hired to travel to the floating city of Columbia to free a young woman from the ultra-nationalist, radical leader of the city. The narrative of BioShock Infinite is wrapped up in the game’s DLC, Buried at Sea, the second and final part of which released in early 2014. While none of the previous games have shared protagonists, the ending of Infinite drastically changed the scope of the BioShock universe by making the possibilities for future games – well, infinite.

Near the conclusion of Infinite it is revealed that there are innumerable accessible realities in the world of BioShock. It is already rumored – once again through a Cloud Chamber job posting – that the BioShock 4 won’t take place in Rapture or Columbia, the two retrofuturistic cities where all three games have taken place. However, since basically anything is possible narratively thanks to those infinite realities, it’s not out of the question that Booker DeWitt could make an appearance somehow. In fact, he’s much more likely to appear than the protagonists of BioShock 1 and 2, since Jack and Subject Delta weren’t voiced and don’t have any personality to speak of.

How BioShock 4 Will Be Different

It seems unlikely that Booker DeWitt will reprise his role as protagonist in BioShock 4. The original trilogy was the brain-child of Irrational Games founder Ken Levine, and although infinite realities essentially allows for infinite story possibilities, muddying the timelines by having DeWitt be the protagonist again feels as though it would be ill-advised. Levine recently downsized Irrational Games, reforming it into Ghost Story Games, and began development on a so far unannounced title.

BioShock 4 is still a ways away, and there has been no official information on the game except for the initial confirmation that Cloud Chamber is indeed working on a follow-up to Infinite. The possibilities for the game remain numerous, and it inspires confidence that Cloud Chamber is taking plenty of time to develop BioShock 4. Only time will tell if it will live up to its predecessors, but for now fans can take solace in the fact that BioShock 4 is on the way.
