Black Adam Producer Addresses Movie’s DC Multiverse Connection

Hiram Garcia, the producer of the upcoming Black Adam, addresses how the film will deal with the DC multiverse. With Dwayne Johnson in the starring role, Black Adam is set to introduce a number of new characters into the DC universe including Dr. Fate, Hawkman, and Isis. Jaume Collet-Serra, who is best known for his work on Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter, is directing the film.

Alongside Johnson, Black Adam features performances from Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Shahi, Aldis Hodge, and Noah Centineo. Johnson has now confirmed that filming for the movie has wrapped and he’s even expressed a positive reaction to an early cut. Black Adam is one of several DC films scheduled to release in 2022, with The Flash set to introduce the DC multiverse for the first time. The Flash sees Ezra Miller return as Barry Allen and will feature both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s versions of Batman.

In a new interview with The Wrap, Garcia explains how Black Adam will address the DC multiverse. Garcia says that he sees the DC universe films as all being connected and that just because the multiverse isn’t obviously addressed in Black Adam, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist within the world of the story and around the characters. Check out Garcia’s full comment below:

“I don’t know if we’re going to address it, but everything in that DC universe we like to think of is connected somehow. And so the multiverse exists around our characters as well in our world. Not that you’re necessarily going to feel that in our movie, but it is very much a thing, right? We know that there’s going to be some other multiverse factors in there that we know exist. It’s just a matter of when we start to play with it or lean into it, but we’re excited for that Flash movie. Our friends are making it, we know how big and ambitious that movie is and the vision DC has for it. We’re very supportive of it. Andy Muschietti is such a brilliant director. You couldn’t have picked a better guy to do that movie. We’re excited to see it as well. But I do think anytime you’re dealing with any DC movie, fans can always assume that there’s multiverse factors, whether you see it or not, that exist around it.”

It seems like The Flash will be the first DC film to very much lean into the idea of a multiverse, but the character of Black Adam, even if it’s not directly addressed, will also exist within it. Garcia hints also hints that future projects could more fully explore the concept of a multiverse and that it’s not a matter of “if” but more a matter of “when.” It appears that Black Adam is very much laying the groundwork for an entirely new set of characters and, with Garcia’s previous comments that spinoff movies could be developed if the film is a hit, it’s likely that a more direct exploration of the multiverse will happen with future Black Adam films.

With the MCU having success heavily leaning into the idea of a multiverse with films like Avengers: Endgame and the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, it makes sense that DC is also exploring their own multiverse with their own beloved characters. Even if Black Adam doesn’t address the multiverse, The Flash will very much be a major event for DC fans with two iterations of Batman sharing the screen together for the first time. If Black Adam ends up being popular with fans and a Black Adam 2 and spinoffs are greenlit, it seems inevitable that they will more fully address the DC multiverse and the large implications it has for future stories. Black Adam is currently scheduled for release on July 29, 2022.
