Actress China Anne McClain, who plays Jennifer Pierce on Black Lightning, has revealed she planned to exit the show after season 4, even before its cancellation announcement. The series premiered on The CW in 2018 as part of its DC lineup. Black Lightning focuses on Jefferson Pierce, the title hero, as well as his daughters Jennifer and Anissa, superheroes in their own right. Surprisingly, the show had its own canon outside of the Arrowverse for a large portion of its run. That changed with last season’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event, where Jefferson actor Cress Williams guest-starred. As a result, Black Lightning retroactively became a part of the Arrowverse.

Despite this relatively recent change, season 4 of Black Lightning will be its last. Last week, Warner Bros. TV and The CW issued a joint announcement about its cancellation. Black Lightning season 4 will premiere February 8, as a result of The CW pushing its Arrowverse shows to 2021. Though that season will be the show’s last, a spinoff series featuring Khalil Payne/Painkiller (Jordan Calloway) is still a possibility. A backdoor pilot will air as part of season 4.

Viewers are still processing the news of Black Lightning’s cancellation. However, over the weekend, McClain shared surprising news about her participation in the series. In a video posted to Instagram, the actress revealed she intended to exit the series at the end of season 4, information the rest of the cast already knew. McClain said the decision was made before filming began. She didn’t elaborate on the reasoning behind her exit, only saying it was “For different reasons, that, to be honest, I don’t want to go into. I just want y’all to trust me on it.” However, McClain did reassure fans she had a good time working on Black Lightning, adding she’ll be in a limited number of season 4 episodes. Some may be surprised to hear about McClain’s exit, considering her important role in Black Lightning. However, a departure of this magnitude isn’t unheard of in the Arrowverse. Notably, Emily Bett Rickards, who played Felicity Smoak, left Arrow ahead of its final season. It presented a challenge for the series, as Felicity was part of the show’s main couple. However, Arrow made it work, with Rickards even returning for a notable scene in the series finale. With Black Lightning, that likely won’t be an issue, as it seems probable one of McClain’s episodes will be the last one, especially with the cancellation news.

It’s hard to imagine Black Lightning without Jennifer, and some viewers may be relieved they won’t have to find out what that looks like, at least over a long period of time. Hopefully, the show is able to turn out a satisfying series finale for all of its characters, including Jennifer. Viewers will be able to see how the final season unfolds when it premieres next year.
