Black Manta Is More Mature in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Says Star

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II opens up about his return as Black Manta and teases a more mature portrayal of the villain. Abdul-Mateen II made his DC Extended Universe debut in the first film as David Kane, a ruthless pirate and high-seas mercenary who crosses paths with the titular hero and loses his father while trying to battle Aquaman on a submarine. Having originally been hired by Orm Marius to hijack the sub to spark an Atlantean union to wage war on the surface, Kane partners with the Atlantean king to hunt down Aquaman and Mera using a suit of Atlantean armor that Kane modifies, renaming himself Black Manta.

The first Aquaman was a smash hit upon its release, grossing over $1.14 billion at the global box office and earning generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Development on a sequel began shortly thereafter, with Momoa returning alongside Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Amber Heard as Mera, Abdul-Mateen II as Kane and Teumera Morrison as Thomas Curry, as well as director James Wan and screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. With a story co-written by Momoa and Johnson-McGoldrick, production on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom began in London in late June.

Abdul-Mateen II spoke about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with Variety while promoting the newly-released Candyman. In looking at the difference in characterization for the DCEU sequel, the Emmy winner teased that the character will be “more mature” and have “more time to breathe” and that the film itself will further explore the man behind the suit. “We get to understand him and some of his values and some of his motives. Hopefully in Aquaman 2, we can present a more well-rounded version of David Kane. In the first film, we sort of got to meet him, but mostly it was about Black Manta. And this one, my hope is that we can meet David Kane a bit more and find out what makes him tick, and some of the things that he wants and struggles with.”

As exciting as it was to see the iconic archenemy brought to life on the big screen in the first film, some were a bit let down to see Black Manta serve as a secondary antagonist in the first Aquaman. With the plot of the original necessitating a larger focus on themes of lineage and cultural roots, it made sense for Wilson’s Ocean Master to serve as the primary villain of the film while Kane/Manta was at least established for sequels and future DCEU films. Though plot details surrounding the sequel are still largely unknown, Abdul-Mateen II’s comments do prove an exciting tease of what can be expected from his return in the film, namely that it sounds as though he will be getting more screen time.

Given how Kane/Manta was revealed to have survived in the post-credits scene for the first film, his return for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom should prove to be an exciting new showdown between the villain and titular hero. It does also raise the interesting question of whether Randall Park will be reprising his role of Dr. Stephen Shin, who saved Kane and nursed him back to health, for the sequel as they track down the Atlantean as was teased in the original Aquaman. Only time will tell when the DCEU sequel arrives in theaters on December 16, 2022.
