Black Panther: 10 Played-Out MCU Tropes The Disney+ Series Needs To Avoid

The MCU is bringing forward a Wakanda-focused spin-off of Black Panther, but there are certain tropes that Disney+ should actively avoid.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is continuing its new avenues in storytelling with a TV spin-off of Black Panther centering around the country of Wakanda. This show will be taking a much deeper look into a setting that could have been portrayed in better detail in the first movie.

With the location confirmed, the MCU needs to find a unique style to present the series. It has so far used film and movie tropes to abundant lengths, which has had the effect of making them played-out with little room for surprise. The Wakanda series should steer clear of falling into this practice, with certain tropes that should be avoided.

10 The Overflow Of Comedy

The MCU has been accused of indulging in comedy to excessive lengths, with this trope being most associated with the series these days. Even Black Panther had many quotes that had a lot of comedic material attached, which the TV series should avoid since the setting just didn’t match well with a comic tone.

The TV series will bring in new characters who will suffer in their staying power if they start being all jokey about things straight off the bat. The show needs to establish itself as its own entity rather than bring out tired comedic tropes as an attempt to connect with the audience.

9 Sudden Reversal Of Life Choices

It wasn’t unwarranted for T’Challa to make his last line in the Black Panther movie about revealing Wakanda’s true nature as the movie had built up to that moment. However, the MCU has used the trope of refreshing character decisions several times previously in order to present a new story.

This was most noticeable for Tony Stark, who had given up being Iron Man in the third movie, only to suddenly be in that position in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Characters reversing their decisions undermines previous storylines, which the Wakanda TV series can’t afford since these characters aren’t known to viewers and need to have a mindset that doesn’t make their personalities uneven.

8 Informed Attributes

Quite a few characters got limited screentime in Black Panther, with exposition provided for their backgrounds rather than this actually being shown. The MCU has used this trope to set characters up without displaying these characteristics, which isn’t the best technique since it’s a lazy way of storytelling.

The TV show has the benefit of an extended runtime due to having multiple episodes on hand, meaning characters that are introduced will have enough space to showcase their potential. Simply using conversations to claim someone is strong or smart doesn’t do the trick as this needs to be shown onscreen for it to be believable.

7 New Characters Are Stronger

Since it’s known that there won’t be any new characters to take up Black Panther’s role, there’s no reason for the MCU to make use of this trope. The TV series should have characters whose limits are established, along with highlighting their flaws since exceptionally powerful characters straightaway give one nothing to root for.

The trope is also played-out since it makes battles very predictable as it’s obvious that the new character will be the winner. Another issue is that later weaknesses don’t align with the characters’ initial strengths.

6 Stereotyping Personalities

This was seen in Black Panther, where certain characters were stuck with tags such as “the smart one,” or “the loyal friend,” which means they don’t have much room for growth. The MCU has featured quite a few cases like these by now and it’s time to move on.

The Wakanda series doesn’t need to have characters who bring in one-note personalities, not when viewers will be expecting fleshed-out characterizations to follow. It’s far better to bring forward personalities that have elements of both good and bad rather than stereotypical qualities that have limited range.

5 Battles Presented As A Spectacle

This would work if it were a movie in question, but the Wakanda TV series will do better by telling smaller, relatable stories. When battles are presented as a spectacle, they should have big stakes involved, such as the Battle of Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War.

WandaVision did an excellent job in subverting this trope, which is what the Wakanda TV series should emulate. By keeping things smaller in scale, the battles will come across as personal and meaningful. Many movies in the series have made the mistake of invoking the battle spectacle trope and have gotten lost in memory.

4 Government Is Useless

Actually having an able government is something Black Panther II should improve upon, with the first movie portraying a very fragile version of this. The MCU has indulged excessively in this regard, with the government now being essentially bad guys who do nothing for the protagonists.

The Wakanda series has to portray its government as a competent one since the country has been put into great focus as a superpower. The characters should either steer clear of political storylines or make use of the government in times of need.

3 Ambiguously Absent Characters

This is the go-to trope for the series, as several characters have simply not been mentioned when they should have obviously been referenced. This was the case for Vision in Avengers: Endgame, as well as Hawkeye in Avengers: Infinity War.

With the TV series set in Wakanda, a place whose most famous character is Black Panther, his status needs to be confirmed. The entire Golden Tribe should be referenced, ideally incorporating characters in the show as well. Ambiguous absences where viewers will be expecting these characters to show up in Wakanda will be too big of a plot hole.

2 Demoted To Extra

There’s a pretty good chance of characters like Nakia, the Dora Milaje, and Shuri appearing in the TV series. However, their appearances only as extras would be a big demotion, something one can’t trust the MCU not to follow through with since it’s a trope seen before.

This was the case with the likes of Pepper Potts, Peggy Carter, and even Nick Fury in previous movies, with their smaller roles standing out as a sore spot. If the Wakanda series will be featuring established characters as part of the regular cast, they need to be central to the plot.

1 Sympathetic Villain

Erik Killmonger is always noted as a sympathetic antagonist, with even his final fight against Black Panther considered a tragic end. The problem is that the MCU has milked this trope out entirely, with the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Ghost, Thor’s Loki, The Avengers’ Thanos, and Killmonger himself all portrayed this way.

The Wakanda series needs to bring villains who portray the bad side of the country, as this will make the protagonists’ own heroics stand out in contrast. It’s also high time that antagonists are seen in a purely negative light as in the comics, so the TV series should stick to the classic style of storytelling.
