The next playable hero in Marvel’s Avengers has been revealed, as Square Enix announced that Black Panther will be coming to the game later this year. Marvel’s Avengers is meant to receive free playable heroes throughout its run, with Hawkeye coming to the game today.

The existence of Black Panther as one of the playable heroes in Marvel’s Avengers has already leaked in the past. According to the leaks, Black Panther will have a raid set in a Vibranium mining facility in Wakanda. The leaks have also claimed that War Machine and She-Hulk will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers in the future, but there is currently no official confirmation of their role in the game.

Square Enix has held its first Showcase event, which included a lengthy segment dedicated to Marvel’s Avengers. The segment ended with the reveal that Black Panther will be coming to the game later this year, as part of a story campaign called War For Wakanda. The trailer can be seen on the official Square Enix YouTube channel, and it confirms that Ulysses Klau will also be appearing in the game.

Square Enix also revealed an updated content roadmap for Marvel’s Avengers running through to the end of 2021. Hawkeye and the Future Imperfect campaign are at the start of the roadmap, as they’re available now alongside the PS5/Xbox Series updates. The Tachyon Anamoly and Red Room Takeover events will be released sometime in the Spring, and the Project Omega and Wasteland Patrol events will start in the Summer. They will be joined by an increased level cap, new high-level gear, the ability to replay the original story campaign, and new villain sectors.

Marvel’s Avengers is badly in need of new content and it’s good to see a new roadmap for the game, even if all of it is broken down into loose release windows. It remains to be seen whether the new events and story campaigns will have what it takes to bring fans back to the game, as many walked after completing the initial story campaign. Marvel’s Avengers badly needs a shift in direction, and missions set in Wakanda have the potential to do just that. If the War For Wakanda missions involves more battles against endless waves of A.I.M. troops, then a change of scenery won’t do much for the overall gameplay experience.
